The federal government has launched the first phase of a teacher training programme to reintroduce history in the basic education curriculum.

The development was announced on Thursday at an inauguration ceremony held in Abuja.

History was removed from the basic school curriculum during the 2009/2010 session — a development which has elicited sharp criticism.

However, in March 2018, the federal government announced a reintroduction of the subject.

Speaking at the event on Thursday, Adamu Adamu, minister of education, who was represented by Goodluck Opiah, minister of state for education, expressed concern over the non-teaching of history for more than 10 years.

He, however, added that 3,700 history teachers have been shortlisted for the first round of training to reintroduce the subject.

“History used to be one of the foundational subjects taught in our classrooms, but for some inexplicable reasons, the steam of teaching and learning was abolished,” he said.

“As a result, history was subsequently expunged from the list of subject combinations our students could offer in both external and internal examinations, compared to the subjects that were made compulsory at basic and secondary levels in Nigeria.

“This single act, no doubt, relegated and eroded the knowledge and information that learners could otherwise have been exposed to. It was a monumental mistake and we have already started seeing its negative consequences.

“The loss created by the absence of this subject has led to a fall in moral values, erosion of civic values, and disconnect from the past.

“More worrisome was the neglect of the teaching of this subject at basic and post-basic levels of education, which invariably eroded the knowledge of the evolution of Nigeria as a country.”

The minister added that the focus of the re-introduction is the training of teachers in order to enhance capacity development.

On his part, Hamid Boboyi, executive secretary, Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), said the selection of teachers was done on pro rata basis, with 100 teachers each from all the states and the federal capital territory (FCT).

In his remarks, Muhammadu Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, said Nigeria has a rich history which can be effectively explored for nation building.

He appealed to traditional rulers to support the step taken by the government.

“We owe it as a duty to encourage research for the documentation of the history of our people, and should be forthcoming in granting access to historical records in our custody,” he added.

I remember doing History right from Primary One and it is still helpful to me till date. Whoever removed it did that generation that missed it a colossal injustice. I am happy it is coming back.

Children will now know that Oba of Benin is a direct descendant of Oranmiyan who is one of the younger children of Oduduwa. That Owu is the First child and Ooni is the spiritual Head of all the Yoruba including all the descendants of Oduduwa.

While the Bini proletariat may not be Yoruba, its royalty is Yoruba. The heads of past Oba of Bini are buried in Ile Ife and the Itsekiris are Yoruba who migrated to their present homeland in Delta state.

The attempt to review history lule and created far more problems because it was an attempt to introduce lies into our history.

Good development. History is sacrosanct. If we do not where we are coming from, we may never appreciate our core values as a nation.

Teach the children History with Truth
Dont teach history of lies and half truths. Teach them the exact way the Civil War took place. How many millions of children and women and men were gruesomely killed. Expose the root causes. You can give different accounts from both sides.
With that the future generations would not rush into war or battles or needless tribal differences. But when you lie to them for peace to reign the only peace u get is graveyard kind of peace

Why was History removed from their curriculum and which adminstration approved it? This has remained a debate.

However, in my software engineering class, my professor would always tell us that History was the most useless course to study in the university.

If you want to know the reason, pay for me for that knowledge because I spent money to go to school grin

Good one... They should also introduce culture as a subject... So we can learn more about other tribes... Instead of having biased opinions

They should endeavor to teach history undiluted and from our point of view.

They should discard any foreign tales of our history.

By so doing, we just might be able to begin the process of understanding how we got here, how we can begin the process of rekindling the eroded trust and mutual suspicions, and perhaps start the process of rebuilding on specific defined terms as one people.

Why did the Yaradua/GEJ administration expunge history from our educational curriculum and who was the minister of education at this time?

If history was being taught during when Buhari was running for Presidency prior to 2015 election, maybe we'll have avoided him.

However, history must take note of his administration as the most stupid, clueless, nepotic and corrupted president in our democracy.

History is very important to our collective growth and development as a nation. We need to understand our past to plan for our future.

The British and other colonialists lobbied for history to be removed from our schools which was all part of an attempt to erase African history and to make us believe poor kids on CNN and BBC is our history....they replaced our history with a eurocentric history that glorifies imperialists...

Civic education is about how civil society works - people, government at all levels, sro's and ngo's. It is not history.

Good. Not just anyhow history ooo, but our real history.

Not the history that teachers northerners to hate southerners, or southerners to hate northerners.

Not the history that teaches us to become enemies, but to keep the country sane.

Forming committees and inaugurating here and there over unnecessary stuff; what was the rationale for the banning history as a subject ? hundreds of millions of naira would be wasted on this unnecessary exercise .

This thread would have reached 200 pages if the date of removal was 2015 . They would have blame the north and Buhari for trying to stop their children from learning about the atrocities committed by the north with the help of the whole world.
Ipob are terrorists.

They will now Understand that Lagos is Yoruba Aworiland and not a “no mans Land”

and that the first Oba of Lagos was Awori from Isheri Olofin and not Bini

And Awolowo not Azikiwe Clearly Won the 1956 Western Region Elections even without any Cross. Carpeting

and that Oduduwa entered into Ile Ife riding a Horse and wearing Metal Armour

and he didn’t just fall from the sky

And that the Egun are descendants of Oduduwa through the Olupopo his son

and that it was Gowon that released Awolowo from Jail in Calabar and not Ojukwu

And that Calabar Wellington Bassey was Ironsi’s Senior in the Army

And that Gowon,Bassey, Banjo, Njoku, Effiong, Kurubo were all Ojukwus Senior in the Army

And that it was Ojukwu who rejected food Corridors to feed his starving People

and that Majority Of Itsekiri migrated from Ijebu,Ilaje, and Owo and are not Edo

and that Yoruba Balogun Alanamu was the Ruler Of Ilorin that the British fought ,deposed, banished to Jebba

and replaced with the previously already defeated Emir in 1900

Many of us were turned into impromptu Historians and History Teachers
