As a Nigerian, when you hear the word, "earn in dollars," your brain starts to dance around dreamily and you become ecstatic and willing to join the dollar family.

As a freelancer, the ultimate goal is to make money in dollars due to the high exchange rate in the black market; the gurus know this and they are fully exploiting this.

Today, there are so many gurus who promise to teach you how to make an incredible amount of money in freelancing, and they continually advertise their brand around that promise.

This is very unfortunate because even though you can make a lot of money freelancing, it is nowhere as straightforward or certain as the gurus will like you to believe.

Let's start with the testimonials:

Apart from the problem of fake testimonials that many fake gurus will bring forward as evidence of their expertise and sure methods, many of the real testimonials that they showcase as proof are just like a game of numbers. Let's assume that a guru has 100 students, and 5-10 become successful, these ones who succeeded out of the 100 will have their testimonials shown to the world as evidence that their "secret strategies" really work. Do you really these 5-10 students are enough proof of the guru's expertise given the wild claims that guru must have made?

The wild promises

This is one of the craziest aspects of the guru industry that really shakes me up. Let's assume that the guru is as skilled as he/she claims, what makes you think that the methods that you have been taught are sure to win over a client? Let's take Upwork as an example: I don't want to know how amazing your proposal is, the client may simply brush it over without a care in the world - that's even if they read it. If the client were to read it, the chance of getting a job through it is pretty low because most of the jobs on Upwork that I have come across simply never lead to any freelancer getting hired. If your Guru who has barely made $2k in 1-2 years tells you that they have a secret Upwork proposal method, you better know that they are deceiving you. No freelancer on Upwork has the perfect or secret job-winning proposal method - None.

How many of them truly make money?

One of the craziest aspects of the guru industry is just how profitable it is. Let's assume you sell a masterclass of 5k to 200 people only, you will have made a sweet 1M naira. Multiply that by several hundreds of people and you start getting the picture. Many gurus today make money by teaching others how to make money; they don't make money by actually using the strategies that they are teaching you. Always remember that!!!

My advice to all Nigerian freelancers

You should only learn freelancing from those who truly make money from it and don't sugarcoat it for you, i.e., those who are brutally honest about how freelancing really works. Note: Knowledge and honesty

Number 3 point is actually true. They make more money from teaching people what doesn't work than from doing the job themselves. That's why they spend time on marketing campaigns and invest almost 30 hours weekly mentoring people. When do they have the time to do their own work. And if truly they make those astronomical monies they claim, when will they have the time to teach.

I once I got a freelance job where I was earning very high weekly, and I knew the effort I put daily. So it begs the question, if you are truly making those six figures, why did you leave it to teach people. It means something went wrong somewhere and you resorted to teaching. If an Upwork Guru starts a class and guarantees to help the over 500 people in it make 500k monthly, only two or three succeeds. There are many variables inside and some of them are not truthful in their ads. Another people that needs to be flogged is these Amazon KDP masterclass with their headline "make 300k weekly even if you don't know how to write or have never written before" really? Lol

God bless our hustle.

Lols. That is quite through. When my friends kept asking me about making money on Upwork, I couldn't help them much because I was just too busy. I later decided to write a book on Upwork to serve as my answer to anyone who asks me about it. I thought I will be done in a month - lols. I kept extending till I finally finished this month. It took me 6 months to finish just because I was just too busy.

That's we you see university lecturers selling clumsily put together books and handouts for profit instead of thinking of engaging working ideas with industries. It is a culture.
