Okonjo-Iweala vows to tackle corruption

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Thursday vowed to tackle corruption in the ministry, saying the move would help the ministry to effectively deliver on its mandate.

She also pledged to put in place equitable training scheme that would help to develop capacity of government officials in the ministry.

The minister said these in Abuja during a meeting with officials of the ministry.

A statement from the ministry quoted her to have urged the members of staff to adopt effectiveness, efficiency and delivery as their watchword in handling their official functions.

It said, “The Coordinating Minister for the economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has urged staff of her ministry to adopt efficiency, effectiveness and delivery as their constant watchwords in handling their official functions.

“This, she says, would lead to better service delivery which is necessary for the success of the present administration’s Transformation Agenda.”

The statement also said, “While laying emphasis on efficient service delivery, Okonjo-Iweala promised to put in place an equitable training and re-training scheme that would enable staff to acquire new skills and knowledge for improved performance.

“During the interactive session, Okonjo-Iweala promised to take a second look at the anti-corruption measures currently in place in the ministry with a view to bringing in measures that would effectively tackle corruption.”

In addition to the official training and re-training programme, she also advised the workers to take advantage of the various e-learning programmes on the Internet to improve themselves, promising that evidence of such self improvement would be rewarded.

Tell that woman to stop deceiving herself. A man would always want to be a law breaker except a working measure is put in place to check him.

Nigeria has no working institution to fight corruption. Police, ICPC, EFCC and Nigerians lack the muscle to stand against the corrupts and corruptness.

What did she do when OBJ was paying her in US dollars the first time she came on board? How is she going to bypass P. Jonathan and GEJ?

Fighting corruption is the collective portfolio of all government officials, nay, all Nigerians.
Since corruption mostly involved money, who better spearhead the fight other than the fellow who holds the purse, and co-ordinate other officials? I think the Finance Minister know what she is about.

It is a shame some of us still wallow in our stupidy! With such zeal and courage,  I was expecting to hear positive coments on the subject matter. We all grave for change and accontability, where we can hold our leaders resposible for their actions and the like; where else can such crusade begin, if notnin this form?

I believe its high time we started talking sence in this medium and not the opposite, It's not a most comments should be made on every post here. Personally, I see no need for all the insults and name callings; I wonder if some of us would use such comments on our own mothers!!

There are allegations that these woman and her consultant friends pocketed about 60 billion naira in consulting fees for the debt payment deal.

She is brilliant no doubt but only an incorruptible person can fight corruption in Nigeria. It only takes some people to blackmail her before she backtracks on cases,

Trust me, there is nothing wrong with paying consultants huge sums to achieve results. The annual interest we were paying on the loans far exceeded the amounts paid to the consultants so Nigeria has benefited.

On corruption, she cannot do that on her own. If GEJ is not ready to completely support her, she will totally fail. So even if she is willing, the hawks in Abuja may prove too powerful and she may have to resign. I see that as the most likely scenario.

I really wonder how people reason on this forum. Some people just want to be heard. Wha's wrong with the minister saying he wants to tackle corruption in her ministry? Has she said she wants to take over the job of Mrs Waziri or anybody People should learn to read and think before commenting angry
Re: Okonjo-iweala Vows To Tackle Corruption by Onlytruth(m): 2:33pm On Sep 09, 2011
I think she should lobby for the removal of Farida Waziri and replacing her with someone more serious about fighting corruption. It is obvious to all sane folks that she cannot achieve anything without an efficient EFCC.

Go after Farida madam! cool

[b]Good! Noticed some don't like that, tough!!!

Abi, someone go first sign the cheque before, the corruption go begin, huh?

Well, if she hadn't sign the cheque, make una come corrupt! We the public, are watching, una!

For the first time in Nigeria, there must be accountability of what we earned against what we spent.  We are fed up of watching these rogues earning #50 Naira a month but live a billionaire's lifestyle they can not defend, based on what they earn.

No, it's got to stop!

Good, everyone is now going to live within the remuneration package we promised to pay them, and which they signed to - it's called 'your Employement Contract'. cool Adding to this, I should suggest, they go back and re-read it once more, to get use to the figures, the Nigerian people promised to pay, maka ndi uta! grin

And, if ino big for them eyes sorio o, na so we go kuku ma pay o, or find another job grin grin

You see, oyibo them call am 'living within your means'. But, the Nigerian public say na - 'cut your coat according to your size', and that's what Mrs Okonjo Iweala is saying, too.  So, what's wrong with that?

He who does not like the idea, can quietly move back to his village.huh?

This ogbu opi ga ezi imi wey the Nigerian people dey suffer for this country, must stop - as anyone with integrity knows that there's pride and respect in earning your income, than not only stealing from the public you suppose to be serving, and acting as if, the money you stole, is earned by your own effort, really? angry
