There was no Boko...but there was Maitatsine, Zak Zaky was getting started, and then there were a long list of religious riots , especially in 1987.

Matatsine was really bad. In two bad days and nights in Kano alone, hundreds died. It took the combined efforts of the Army, the Air Force (yes, jet fighters went into action over Kano) and the Police to put that violent reaction down. Two bad nights in 1980.

You think this thing started yesterday? No way. Boko Haram is just the latest self. Matatsine had been around for two decades before they went hot in 1980-5. (Combined with Chadian rebels operating in old Borno...Buhari made his name by chasing them out as an army officer in the 1982-3 period..before he became head of state).


And like I said, it is because we are not a producer nation. The day we become industrial...is the day that all this will end. Idle hands...

Let's even assume it is true...

It would lead to a large scale war. Millions dead, millions displaced, and crucially investments wrecked...and a lot of big Northern elite have investments across the country. All gone because of a useless religious war.

Sudan tried that Islamization project. It led to 2-3 decades of war, at the end of which they lost 75% of their oil revenue...and now they be struggling well well.

Religious war worked....back in the 19th century. It won't work today.
