Pls Who Know About Computer Servers And If They Work In Nigeria by Nigerianquest: 1:31pm On Apr 05, 2023
Hello,

I would like to know about Computer Servers and if Internet service providers (ISPs), like their MTN, GLO, 9Mobile, accepts them, how much it would cost to launch a server station in Nigeria, how good is the Network, etc.

Anyone with that experience?
Computer scientists in the house, pls help.

U need to hire companies like Siemens or Huawei to build your own network it requires steady power supply. Find Relay Sites for tips on negotiating the lease for optical fiber , use Google cloud or aws or your own data center. Build a Billing system for Customer for the ISP the are many solutions. Find companies that make access point and CPE equipment . ISP needs a license from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

More suggestions from Experts in the house would also be greatly appreciated.

So I'm not sure I understand the question. Why would Servers not work in Nigeria. Or is your question about large Data Centres like AWS and Linode?

It is not compulsory to own a data center but big ISP have their own since we have many provider for data server like Google cloud, Azure,AWS no outage like the one experienced in Nigerian servers. He wants to build a mobile network like MTN , Airtel and Glo .

Oh I didn't say servers won't work in Nigeria. Let's say, I'm hosting my website on aws or Google clouds, and the costs of hosting there is expensive. So now I want to have my own data center with 1000 Terabytes.

Now the question is...

1. Where in Nigeria can I buy those web servers?

2. How much would they cost? (For 1000 Terabytes).

3. Do Internet service providers like MTN, GLO, allow you buy internet subscription for those computer servers? (Note: This is because you'll need your own router to set up a computer web server and some countries ISP doesn't allow web servers monthly subscription).

4. Is the Network for those computer servers good? (That's, hope no downtime and the rest, etc).

Computer servers are in computer Labs in some universities, so anyone that knows the answer to these should pls help the house.

I can only answer number 1. I am not in anyway endorsing them, but I have worked with Layer 3 as a Nigerian based Cloud computing service provider. https://www.layer3.cloud/ I have deployed a handful of Cloud based telephony systems on their servers and they have met my needs. They are not a Google or AWS so don't expect to find all the software in the world available. I had to send them links to my iso files before they could make them available for me

Some companies like Airtel, Mainone & MTN offer co location services. they give you space at their DC and you can setup up your equipment (servers et al) there.
They would provide power, security , connectivity for your equipment. but this isn't a cheap service . I know banks use this sort of service in Nigeria.

You will have to install a Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) in the towers or transmitters for network coverage for shared services.

Hey Mod,

Sorry but could you kindly stop deleting replies? No matter how silly it is we need. It's all about getting many information from people in order to find one's answer.

I had my response removed too, and it's really uncool. That isn't the Nairaland I fell in love with.

I was also banned for days and I'm still surprised. At first I thought it was a mistake. Pls stop those regulations. Hindering freedom of speech is a National crime anywhere, as long as my response doesn't go against your policies, it must stand.

Thank you.

Most likely a bot that slammed you a ban. Did you post a link or something similar?

What you want to achieve is pretty simple but you're not framing your words correctly.

You want to build or own your web servers. If that's what you want, it's achievable. Many individuals own their server systems in their home.

Now the question is...

1. Where in Nigeria can I buy those web servers?

There are many Authorized HP|Dell dealers in Ikeja, Lagos. They're visible online. You can also order used servers and have it shipped to you. A single server can serve you, but you actually need a minimum of 2 servers.

2. How much would they cost? (For 1000 Terabytes).

The cost of a server is not determined by it's storage. A one petabyte storage is common on NAS that can be linked to your server. A server can cost you 1M NGN and another can cost you 30M NGN. The latest HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen10 Plus cost about 20k USD.

3. Do Internet service providers like MTN, GLO, allow you buy internet subscription for those computer servers? (Note: This is because you'll need your own router to set up a computer web server and some countries ISP doesn't allow web servers monthly subscription).
Yes, there are several ISPs that can provide you good service. MTN, GLO have several plans to suit your needs. There are many other companies. I don't understand some countries ISP that doesn't allow web servers monthly subscription. Give examples.

4. Is the Network for those computer servers good? (That's, hope no downtime and the rest, etc).

Yes, the network is good. All networks can suffer from downtime that's why you should have 2 providers. At a time I had service from Mainone and Glo.

Computer servers are in computer Labs in some universities, so anyone that knows the answer to these should pls help the house.

Yes, computer servers are in many universities and companies in Nigeria, but you're not building anything close.

All you need is a Domain name for it. But your Servers will be located in Europe, Australia, USA....... Although, you will be the administrator and scale as you want, even upto 1 petrabyte.

had you done your research averagely, you wouldn't be here. It's very cheap to own your own server, but it's very expensive in all regards, to own a reliable functioning server.

common data subscription sef, you wouldn't be using same data subscriptions you use for your modem, no matter if it's marketed as unLimited.
Security nko
Constant power supply nko
Capable CPUs/GPUs nko

see eh, even many very big companies including netFlix lease or rent their servers, not build their own farms because it's cheaper renting/Leasing, than running one.

most of we who built ours, did so for certain reasons, yet don't use it for 100% of our useCases

if this person have the funds, why not start with coLocation ?

InFact, would suggest this person starts with managing a small VPS without any controlPanel (e.g cPanel), but commandLine; then move onto bareMetal, then if by this stage, He/She still see the need to handle things like this him/her self, then opt for coLocation.

the moment you get to stage of using bareMetal (aka dedicated), and depending on contract agreements, you start dealing with things like device failures and replacements. you need order for parts, have array of disks soshould any go down/bad, things continues running till you have the part changed. what about when there's delays in delivery the parts you ordered ? e be many things.

una think say server administration na moiMoi. by the time some services goes down with no explanable reason, by the time calls begin fly in from different corners, so tey you are sitting at the edge of your chair, sweating profusely despite having AC & Fan nearBy, so lost in track of time you forgot you haven't taken breakFast, and it's close to evening, then you go understand why atimes, you need focus on your business, and let those in that line hanndle their thing. except of course, you really have a reason to.

it's like trying to do email Hosting, could you ever do it better than those who focus on it entirely and onScale ?
