Abia Govt Reverses Position On Gang Rape by OAM4J: 4:37am On Sep 26, 2011
Abia govt changes position on gang rape

ABIA State Government has said its statement on the gang rape video clip was based on claims by the Vice-Chancellor of the state University, the institution’s student union government and the state police commissioner.

Five suspected members of a cult group had gang-raped a student of ABSU, recorded the incident and posted it on the Internet, a development that had triggered an uproar across the country.

The state government had earlier described the claim that five students from the state university gang-raped a female student as false, insisting that such an incident did not take place within the university.

But the Media Adviser to the State Governor, Mr. Bonny Iwuoha, explained that the earlier position of the state government on the matter was based on the report credited to the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Chibuzor Ogbuagu, the institution Students Union Government and the police.

Iwuoha, who argued that the matter was still an allegation, recalled that Ogbuagu, the school’s SUG and the police had maintained that there was no rape incident.

He said, “The statement that was made initially by the state government was based on the report of the Vice-Chancellor, President of the university’s student union government and the police.

“The Vice-Chancellor said nothing of that nature happened. The university’s SUG and the police also said there was no rape incident. So the state government reacted based on that.”

Iwuoha said the state government would still rely on the ongoing investigation by the police before taking a position on the matter.

The Abia State Commissioner of Police, Bala Hassan, on Sunday confirmed that the police had apprehended two of the five suspects allegedly involved in the rape.

Hassan said the police acted on the information given about the identity of the suspects on the Internet to make its arrest, adding that they were working hard to apprehend the remaining three.

The CP said the suspects were arrested within the Uturu campus of the university.

He could not disclose if the police had made further findings in the cause of unravelling the identity of the rape victim.

Hassan, however, said those arrested were “mere suspects” as the Internet site that broke the story of the rape incident in the university did not disclose the full names of the purported rapists.

The CP said no five names listed as the assumed rapists had their surnames attached to them, saying it would be difficult for the police to identify the likely culprits.

Re: Abia Govt Reverses Position On Gang Rape by Nobody: 5:22am On Sep 26, 2011
What an excuse to say that arrest was difficult because, the internet didn't provide the surnames of the 'mere suspects'. It seems that the CP isn't interested in unraveling the case.sad #kudos to those agencies/NGO that worked harder to getting to the root of the incidence.

At your age you should not be discussing PDP because reading your post is a living proof that some humans can live without using their brain! Now that you are still growing up, such heavy weight issue will definitely bend you over.
Re: Abia Govt Reverses Position On Gang Rape by Pukkah: 5:54am On Sep 26, 2011
So why was the state government in a hurry to repudiate the story if all it wanted to do was to re-echo the VC's story?

Anyway, it's the subsequent events that will give an indication of the state government's stand of this matter, e.g., what it does to the VC that 'misled' it, how it follows up this case with the Police, what it does about the University's emerging negative reputation, etc.

I dont bliv ds. Am a satudent of absu, uturu campus 2b precise. If an arrest has been made the entire students would have known by now. I still disagree strongly that d rape happened in sch and i also disagree that the rapists and the victim are absu students. Av watched d video likewise almost every student of absu and nobody could recognise the gal's face or the rapists voices. Let me ask a question pls. Wia exactly in campus wia d 2 suspects arrested?

Whether it happened in the school or not, the government, ABSU and security operatives should not let this be swept under the carpet.

Is it because they dont want to blacklist the school, that why they are complacent about this evil act

If they dont bring these dead bastards to book, NEMESIS will catch up on them all.

Dt a state gov will only rely on statements credited to an interested party without using d limitless apparatus @his disposal to find d truth shows how hopeless d case of theodore orji is.Evryday he continues to display levels of incompetence dt beggars imagination.
To d commissioner of police in d state, well anythin sed here about d police is a waste of typing energy.
To d pson dt sed he's not aware of any arrest made, was he xpecting to hear loudspeakers, for him not to b aware of d incident itself till now shows he's dfinitely not informed.
To d social media, let's kp up d heat.

I think that the Abia State government is only just waking up, the Government House Press just left the school.
However, they had me doubting the seriousness of their decision when the photographed the hostel rooms, obviously to ascertain the room where the rA.pe took place, when it's clear from the video that the room is bigger than the hostel rooms.
