Opportunity comes but once. The opportunity is here again for the prepared minds. Before my NYSC in 2004, I had a mindset to serve and be retained in a multinational company during my service year, that dream came to pass. One major thing from my years of industrial experiences lacking in Nigeria is MENTORSHIP. Young graduates roam about like sheep without Shepherd and most time end up in POS and KEKE businesses. This should not be so.
Do you know that the refinery is going to bring industrial revolution in Nigeria and Africa at large. Those prepared will be absorbed while the unprepared will continue the blame the government.
Not everybody will work in the refinery, majority will work in the offset of the refinery. There will be hundreds of auxiliary companies that will come onboard as affiliates. More production from oil companies, hence more job openings. Many experience hands will leave their present jobs and migrate to the refinery jobs, hence more vacancies in other sectors.
There will be placement for all the prepared minds irrespective of the course of study; Engineering, linguistics, medical, accounting, safety, foreign relation, statistics, chemistry, and so on.

I will be letting you know what you should do to increase your chances of being absorbed there.
Please indicate if you're following. We move.

Am a successful business man, running my personal business at the moment and some earn salary under me.
I studied Electrical/Electronics Engineering in my first degree and did my masters in Control Engineering. I left company as an Automation manager. I was trained locally and internationally and had worked with many Expatriates across the globe. All through my service, it was all problem solving. The problems never ends and very fees hands were involved. I was working as an employee and running my business at the same time. The business grew and could pay my salary, I quit and became my own boss.
Am compelled by the level of unemployment in the country and youth involvement in crimes to render this unsolicited service. Am not here to make money so relax and learn from my over 15year industrial experiences

You're very correct...so many job opportunities will emerge both directly and indirectly... Competent hands looking for new jobs, challenges and with connections will get that refinery jobs, thereby making their former positions vacant. But what can we youths do to take advantage?

Company work is different from government work. You can be in government job and be earning salary without any reasonable input but not so in industrial circle.
Do you know how much barrels of oil needed to be produced in a day ? It's a lot of problems to achieve this !
As many people as possible who can offer solutions to solving these problems are needed.
Machine problems are there, skills problems are there, human problems are there, financial problems are there, safety problems are there, logistics problems are there, language problems are there, electricity problems are there, supply problems are there. In fact the problems are too numerous to mention !

The question now is - which of these problems do you have the capacity to solve ?

What do you know?
That course you studied, what can you make out of it?
This is how I got my first job, not by experience but deep knowledge.

While I was serving (NYSC), there came a problem that halted production and attracted the attention of the management. The fault was uncommon and the technicians never encountered it before. Written on the production machine was REGENERATION fault. It was very strange to the electricians on duty. Confusion everywhere. That was very big problem. The solution to that problem was provided by me and that earned me instantaneous employment.

How did I provided the solution?
Induction motor is very common in industry. I took time to learn and study about it. While reading about it one day, I came across the word regeneration. That certain conditions can make induction motor to be acting as a generator. That singular knowledge changed my life.

I have been part of many interview panels, what you hear from some graduates make you wonder whether they even attended university.
What do you know about the course of your study?

It's politics my man. Else, FG wouldn't have been celebrating as it's shameful they can't maintain the existing refineries.

A lady approached me one day for job. I asked her what she studied and she said statistic. That made me to write to the management the need to employ three statisticians, one for each shift, taking production data. My request was approved. The human resource manager asked me to bring one person and I submitted this lady CV.
Before the interview, I told her what to expect - theoretical knowledge and Computer Excel works. With so much emphasis, please go and learn excel.
During the interview, she answered well on theory but failed Microsoft excel. She was taken because of my influence. On the day of resumption, they were introduced to our technical adviser (Foreigner) who was excited about relief they will provide. The man gave them a job to put in excel sheet. This lady could not and that's how she lost that offer.

The question still remains - How prepared are you ?

If you're in conversant with induction motor, there is what is called slip angle. The angle between the magnetic fields speed produced by the stator coils and that of the rotor. Normally, the rotor field speed lags behind that of the stator field. There are conditions that makes the rotor field speed higher than that of the stator field speed. If that happens, the motor start acting like a generator and that's what's called regeneration.

How I solved it
There is a unit attached to a drive system called Electronic brake. That unit handles regeneration faults. When I open the unit, I discovered that the fuse cut and I made a replacement.

Let me not sound high by talking about Automation, Electronics, Mechanical, Civil, Project, Mechatronics, Process, Quality, Electrical, Spare parts inventory management, Procurement, Industrial, and Production Engineering.
Let's start low
Do you know you can learn forklift driving, truck driving, fire service skill, safety management, etc
Any of these and others not mentioned above can get you the ticket.

Do you know that there are activities and operations that are common in the industries though done in different ways. When they talk about job experience, they are referring to those activities.
You may not have done any of those activities practically but having good understanding of them and incorporate them in your CVs make the employers see you to have gotten the required experience.
More so, this deep understanding and knowledge boost your courage and confidence in any interview to be attended

What are those common activities and operations ?
Am going to mention them though not in any order.

If you buy 5kg semovita from market and measure same at home, it gives you same value. Same to 50 kg of cement, 1 litre of groundnut oil, 50Cl of coke, 25g of salt, 500g of OMO detergent, 5 litres from petrol station. In pharmaceutical industry, you get different gram composition of drugs.
From the above, you discovered that many products and industries are involved but one thing is common here.

That's measurement.
You can imagine the consequences of error in these measurement. In the case of drugs - death.
Here comes in calibration, an act of ensuring accurate and error free measurement.
Study about calibration and types and include the word in your CV today as experience acquired. If I start to go into explaining calibration, I may end up writing a book. At least I have introduce the word to you. Just follow up.

2. Inventory Control Management

This is the second key words that should be added to your CV today.
Have you ever entered into an Igbo man big shop. Let's take for example spare parts. You will see variety of spares stacked in different positions. Ask a particular item, the shop owner will take some times to search for it and may tell you it has finished while that item may be hidden somewhere. This is a problem awaiting for solution which the young graduate should provide the solutions to business owners.

Just imagine a big industry, where you have different raw materials stocked piled in tons, varieties of machines and spare parts, finished goods etc. Unlike the shop owners, in industry, there are accurate records and locations for each of these materials.
Ask for any, the person in charge of the inventory will tell you the amount that remains, location, and usage.
There are many method of inventory management: BIN cards, SAP, etc. This is just to expose you to the topic, its left for you to dig deep on it.

3. SAFETY
Another keyword that should be in your work experience is safety and how to use PPE (Personal protective Equipment).
Irrespective of the industries and what they produce, SAFETY is Paramount important. There is what they called safe ACTS and safe CONDITIONS. Also unsafe acts and unsafe conditions. Every employee would like to employ individuals that can act safe. You need to show that you're safe conscious and conversant with the slogan " Safety First ".
Let's look at this example, there is a scheduled maintenance on the power line (NEPA) and they switch off the line. Now, Engineers are carrying out repairs along the line. You, as a staff working in the control room, let say you were not aware of the planned maintenance, just resumed duty and discovered the line was switched off. You cannot just go and switch the power back. There are lay down procedures you MUST follow before you can return the power back. That procedure is what is called CHECKLIST. Without checklist, the result will be fatal.
You can see from the above example, safety is very important in working in any industry and so should be highlighted in your work experience.
Try learn how to operate fire extinguishers and their classes.
I have introduced you to safety, please learn more on that.

Well, I am a mechanical engineering graduate that just obtained my licence as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (Airframe and Powerplant). Beside my B.Eng and technical skills obtained through On The Job Trainings during my aviation course, I have also equipped myself in operations research, project management, financial management and production management. I am optimistic that the refinery will open doors to all and sundry.
Nigeria shall be great again.
