My Experience With Nigerian Police. by OralB: 10:10am On May 27, 2023
Don't know where to post this, Nlfpmod can help take it to the right section please.

Two nights ago, I was heading home (Tollgate) from Iyana Ipaja. It was around 10 PM in the night. When I got to Kola, a disguised officer flagged me down and begged me to give him a lift on my bike. ( I'm a dispatch rider that had just closed for the day). I stopped and he asked me how much he would pay to which I replied it was free of charge. I didn't suspect he was a police officer, I felt he was just stranded like most night travelers on the road. As he approached me to sit, another officer in mufti double crossed me and removed my key almost immediately. Asking me to come down, I requested for his ID to be sure someone wasn't about to steal my bike. I didn't climb down from the bike although he was with my key. I let him know I won't release my bike until I was sure he's a police officer. He called his other team members and they came with two vans. When I saw them, I climbed down from the bike and went to meet them. They didn't pay me any listening ears.
One of them took off with the bike and as I wasn't familiar with the area, I decided to join one of the vans to their station. (Alagbado police station). They dropped me at the entrance of the street and pointed at the station. The station is located in a gated street.
I was the only person who came down from the two vans, others still continued on their raids. It was 10:03 PM when I got to the station, these guys didn't return until 12:14 AM. When they finally returned and I approached one of them to explain what went down, he shouted at me and said if I did not have 50k to bail my bike I shouldn't even come to him at all. My bike would be taken to Alausa and would be 'grounded' like they do to most bikes. He appears drunk already and it seemed like a waste of time engaging him.
I saw another one that looked okay, I approached him and he said I needed 50k to bail the bike. Okay Oga, wetin be my offence?
He muttered some very stupid nonsense out of ignorance.
1) Lagos state has banned bikes. Oga... This is a 200cc bike, I can ride it to anywhere in Nigeria, even to Alausa itself. No law stops me from using a 200cc bike in Lagos, no be 100cc or 150cc Bajaj be this.
2) He said I was riding late at night. What was it by my time he asked? By this time it was past twelve already but Oga you arrested me some minutes to 10 PM. Abi wetin you dey talk sef?
3) He said I was picking a passenger. Oga, there was no one on my bike when you bundled me up and for the records I was trying to help a fellow Nigerian that I felt was stranded not knowing he was an officer in disguise. Main thing is just that, I didn't pick any passenger. I was the only one on my bike at the point of arrest.
4) He said I took one-way. This is actually true but when you know that road, everyone plies one way. From Tollgate to Ile Epo before Iyana Ipaja. The roads are badly damaged beyond measures that Lagos state government had to even allow people drive through BRT lanes sef.

Anyways, so because I took one-way, I would pay 50k? Is this playing?
By the time we were done with this conversation, it was some minutes past 1 AM already. I didn't have a any physical cash on me. There was no way I could make it home and return the next day because of the distance. I decided to offer them 10k bribe so that they could release the bike. One major thing I was trying to avoid was having to disappoint my customers for the next day because my box was filled up with parcels and packages to be delivered in the morning. I had no option than to dance to their tunes. When they weren't looking my side with the 10k offer, I finally threw in the towel and told them I would pay the 50k until they said they wouldn't accept transfer. Are you people mad? Was I supposed to be riding around Lagos with 50k cash in my pocket? Abi where would I see POS operators by that time of the night? They shouted at me to get out of their office. They said I could sleep outside till morning and clear myself when I have cash. At a point, I started fighting with them out of frustrations as I didn't know what to do again. They hit me with their batons and one even threatened to use spray on me. I just went out quietly to sit down.
What did I do?
Firstly, I video recorded myself sleeping outside, explaining my conditions. The plan was to go on Twitter and share with people who could help make it go viral. Secondly, I ensured to record the two instances I was asked to bring 50k to bail my bike.

I created a Twitter account because I'm not on there hitherto and searched for Benjamin Hundeyin's handle. On getting his handle, coincidentally, I saw that he pinned a tweet containing the number of every area commander in Lagos state. I searched for the number and copied Alagbado area commander's number. I called him and he picked the call surprisingly. I explained what happened to him and while I was explaining, he hung up. I called him again and he dropped the call. I was typing a message to further explain myself when he sent me a number to call. It turned out the number was Police control room's number. I called the number and explained to the man that picked up. He immediately called Alagbado unit and I could hear him making the call while I held on. The officer that detained my bike has the name Okunia (didn't see this clearly) Victor written on his uniform. He conversed with someone on phone and the person said he was not on duty and he had no idea who bears that name. He now asked me to put the phone on speaker and approach the Off. Victor letting him know someone from police control room wanted to speak with him. I did as instructed and after a few minutes talking on phone he returned the phone back to me. The man from the control room said if after some few minutes my bike wasn't released, I should call the same number.
I hung up and they started questioning me on how I got the number. I said it was directly from Benjamin Hundeyin and they were shocked. I said Benjamin Hundeyin gave me their Oga's number (ASP Abba) and it was from the Abba that I got the control room's number. ASP Abba happened to be their former boss who had been transferred to another command, from their talks he was transferred in February. They picked offence that he could have called them directly to instruct them to release the bike rather than letting me have access to the control room directly. Within themselves they started saying that no good boss should do that to his boys. I could tell they were scared but one of them was still proving stubborn and was saying I should call the AIG, call CP, that I won't ever see my bike again. Lol. I let him know I have every recorded conversation so far since when they started harassing me till now which was actually true. I played some for him and he was shocked. Are you mad? Are you trying to set us up? Who are you? Are you a spy? He raked and screamed.
So you want us to release your bike and tomorrow we will be trending abi? If you don't delete all these things, we won't let you go. You can go to court. One of the officers quietly approached me and persuaded me to delete the evidence saying since control room has intervened that they would surely release my bike. But it won't be nice to implicate them after. He compelled me to send a message to the control room that my bike has been released and I was treated nicely after it. Lol.
I did as instructed though and I deleted everything too.
All of a sudden, they started making boring jokes with me and started treating me nicely.
It was some minutes to 3 AM already and they said they won't let me go that night because it was late already. They gave me a nice bench to rest on till around 5 AM. They were the one who woke me up and asked me to go. I that was begging to make transfer to them end up not paying a penny for the bike.
Picture 1- SP Benjamin Hundeyin's pinned tweet on Twitter containing the numbers.
Picture 2- The number ASP Abba sent to me. The police control room's number which I believe everyone should have Incase of emergencies.
Picture 3- The message I was made to send to the control room after we resolved our issues.
Picture 4 - Front view of the Police station.

Anyways, don't forget Police is your friend and not all of them are bad.

I understand but there was nothing they could do any more. If they had refused releasing the bike, the narrative would have been different. I sent that message under duress as they threatened to shoot me if I didn't comply. That way, It's a more complicated case than extortion.

I love storylines like this. Blood u maintained composure even under pressure and it paid off. Becos u understood ur rights they couldn't trick you out your spot. It could've been a different story if you had played into their mind games and assaulted an officer due to frustration like 80% of pple would have. they would've switched it up and charged you with assault.

The NPF is filled with unprofessional police officers, and it's understandable it has been like this for decades because the department has been underfunded ND can't hire real professional crime stoppers . it's up to every citizen of this great nation to sick knowledge on how to navigate the bogus system if you want to survive. They know 90% civilians can't afford lawyers or proper defense team so they use that to their advantage.

The useless force is still silencing cases of their men's misconduct.
No surprises at all. If any, it is that they didn't label OP's body that of an armed robber.

Next time, until you have been given your bike and been duly cleared, do not take down the evidence you have on us.
I say "us" because I'm a police officer myself.
It's just an advice, glad no one pulled a quick one on you after deleting them.
