this will not help the university system if what they are demanding is not adequately looked into.

the result will be a university system running without students receiving the required quality of lecture needed thereby killing public university system gradually.
Don't mind these ignoramus rejoicing and shouting no more strike.
No body is talking about what led to the strike.
Instead of this government to meet their demand, they are using power on them.

They think all these lecturers are poor, most of them are rich and can afford to survive without the peanut government is paying them and can even leave the country. It happened during the strike and it may be worse this time if government don't address this

Great News...I hate strike. My sister is part of ASUU, and I still think it was dumb to go on strike. Teachers just got new contract here after 3 yrs of no contract. We dare not strike. In a sane country, education is so critical, you go through the channels and courts if needed, but strike is off the table.

Where would parents keep the kids in primary and secondary schools here? How will it affect their jobs and so on? Higher Education should just be privatized or Semi-Private. Govt has no business in higher education as it is the norm in most normal nations even the Arab Nations where they have money to spend and waste. We call them Public Charter...you hire on merit, fire on merit, promote on merit and pay on merit. Clearly ASUU is not working for Nigeria and Nigerians. I am pro-Union, but they do way way too much to destroy the country. Go on 1-day strike or 1-week max to prove your point, but no more.

If you people that cant think uprightly were argued that because of 8 months strike, they should not be paid, what of nnpc refinery workers who have not refine one drum of crude oil for the past 10 years but are receiving salaries, what would you do to them.

So much for a person that think uprightly, one could attest to that from your gullible and unintelligent response. SMH.

Buhari absconded for 6 months and was paid in full, plus the huge amount used to keep his jet on standby, etc. No double standard.

So, strike is illegal? And, all workers in Nigeria remain in bondage of the rogues calling the shot in Abuja forever?

ASUU doesn't need further attention cos they were the number one partner in rigging the Nigeria election. They are the major reason Nigeria happen this way.

I REPEAT ASUU SHOULD NOT BE GIVING ATTENTION

The court also agreed that ASUU be paid through any means they want, must not be IPPIS, one of the main reasons they went for strike! UTAS is here to stay bro!
The situation is not suitable for both ASUU and FG. The inclinations in UTAS will cover for the 8 months in less than a year and the gains continue....., a situation the government won't want. It will all end in a CBA (Collective Bargain Agreement).
Anyway that's by the way, I am neither a lecturer not ASUU member!

Strike is bad but other avenues in Nigeria including the courts have become too politicised!
In the court, ASUU tendered 4 consecutive letters written to the govt reminding them of the signed agreement they failed to keep without any explanation, even the govt did not reply those letters let alone given reasons why ASUU should soft-pedal, only media showcasing! The court ruled against ASUU in that aspect, though they agreed that ASUU be paid through any means they want, must not be IPPIS, one of the main reasons they went for strike!

CBA is what sane societies go through. We didn't have contract as teachers for 3 years...now we are getting backpay but we can't strike and destroy thousands of lives. UCH staff is on strike, and one of their own staff was left unattended to and died. What kind of nonsense strike is that? Keep working...get paid and keep fighting. Don't destroy others to make a point.

We need to get every department to be accountable for once.

I feel these whole thing can be fixed if Nigeria 🇳🇬 can start hourly pay.

Till then, we will be doing same thing and be expecting different result.

How is it possible for Nigeria to adopt hourly wages?

Nigerian lecturers in the mud.

Do they die since the salary was withheld? They are not in the mud but Nigerian university system is drowning, near the bottom of the river.
If you understand that some federal universities are in blackout for 6 weeks, some 2 weeks like Almighty ABU, you will understand some things. Who will pay 100m naira monthly electricity bill? Government, students or school management. The bottom line is that government is not ready to fund tertiary education well.
Only hypocrite will crucify them for demanding for the salary when you understand that some were paid while they are on strike together, staff of research institutes being paid for over a year while on strike, refinery workers being paid for years while they aren't been working, PMB being paid during his more that 200days treatments in UK.

Actually, lecturers are fighting for the education sector, in particular , the right for students not to suffer increased fees.

If Government does not increase funding, the universities would be faced with two choices....1) either they raise fees to somewhere in the millions of naira or 2) keep quiet, and watch as standards in government universites keep falling. (I think that fees should go up, but most Nigerians don't think that way, so....).

In 2018, the then VC of ABU...someone who would get angry if ASUU went on strike in his university...gave a speech. In the speech, he stated that government gives him one tenth of what he needs to pay for overheads per annum. (ABU is a very large university by landmass, as anyone knows). He then went on to say that if government wants Cambridge level degrees it better pay cambridge level money.

At the end of the day, where do you expect the VC to get extra money from for overheads and so forth. (Note that universites are now doing things like paying directly for electric power...something they were not doing in the 1990's.).

Also, academics in Nigeria are competing on the global stage. You want to do big time research, and y'all can't because government is not funding your labs well.? You cannot compete with global universites because funding is in the pits.?

At the end, we will all complain that our universites are backward. But increase government funding...you will come and say ASUU is fighting for their pocket. Increase fees...you would chant poverty.

All I know is, at some point, the private unis, where fees are sky high...will surpass government universites. And where does that leave the poor who rely on government universities.

ASUU is on strike for far more than their pockets.

I don't know of you are new on Nairaland. You appear green on this platform. No matter the explanation, they won't understand because they reason in a skewed and biased manner.

Time will tell if they are actually fighting for their pockets or not. When school fees hit hard, nobody will tell them.

Do you understand that this ruling favours the students better? It means that lecturers will no longer be going on incessant strikes over and over again because of the same issues. Which will lead to students graduating in time. It also means that lecturers will have to think very hard before they embark on strikes, and when they do, it will be for very short periods, most likely a week or two so it doesn't affect their salaries. Because while you may think that these lectures are fighting for the education sector, they're not. They're actually just fighting for their own pockets. That's why they usually usually call of the strikes when government promise to pay them their salary demands even without word on educational infrastructural development.

Time will tell! We can post for the sake of likes and shares but in all candour, time will tell!

School fees would be high and then we complain again. Have you thought of the repercussion of not funding universities appropriately?! The student will suffer it, most especially the poor and downtrodden

I'm not supporting the government, but ASUU is nothing to write home about. A bunch of professors and senior academicians being taken to the cleaners every blessed time by the supposedly semi educated politicians. Since they can't get their acts together, I'm glad the court is doing it for them. Now they have to go back to the drawing board to find ways to get their demands without having to go on strikes a million times every year. The students are suffering, they themselves are suffering as well, yet they keep doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
