The bizzare story of Bernd Brandes is a truly weird one , one I hope would be the last sort of thing to ever happen in human history , but then again history always repeats itself

Bernd Brandes to put it as mildly as possible, he volunteered to be cannibalised.

Through shady sites on the internet, he met another incredibly disturbed German individual named Armin Meiwes who was looking for someone to eat.

They made arrangments, and met up at Meiwes' house. Meiwes drugged Brandes, then tried to bite Brandes' penis off (at his insistence).

Meiwes eventually cut off the penis with a knife and fried it with garlic and other spices. They both then tried to eat the penis, but by then Brandes lacked the energy to even chew it as he was losing strength and consciousness due to blood loss.

Meiwes then put him in a tub of hot water to make him die more quickly.

He eventually ended up cutting Brandes' throat when he grew tired of waiting.

All of this was recorded on a four-hour tape. I pity the investigators of this case.

Over the course of ten months, Meiwes ate the body which he had stored in his freezer.


He was arrested in 2002, found guilty of manslaughter in 2004 and sentenced to eight and a half years in prison.

The sentence was later overturned .

He was retried in May 2006 and found guilty of murder. He is now in a prison in Germany, serving his life sentence.

Is it really murder if he wanted to be killed?

The court ruled that Brandes was not in a sound mental state when he made the decision to be killed and eaten, and that Meiwes had manipulated him into going through with it.

The case was the first of its kind at that time as far as I know, so I reckon they handled it how they knew best.

To be honest, I agree with their verdict.

What’s to say what he would have done if he was unable to find a willing victim? Unwilling or not, this was a very depraved crime which received a lot of public attention, so it was a good decision to bring down the full hammer of the law on him to deter other sickos. He had the intention to kill someone -> he deliberately made that happen. It’s murder.
