One of my most embarrassing moments has to be back in 2016 during the fees must fall protests that were happening around the country.

My family kept on calling to check up on me and my brother in law kept on emphasizing that I should go home and return back to school when the protests have ended.

Me that enjoyed the sound of the revolutionary songs the comrades were singing, I kept on telling them that I was okay and that I was staying indoors, away from the protests... grin grin grin.. But the truth is that, I kept going to join the protests every now and then, those revolutionary songs nearly made me a comrade back in varsity... grin grin grin.. Even during Sundays I'd find myself carrying extra clothes to church so that after the pastor's sermon, I could immediately go to any of the public toilets around the campus to change and rush to the students' mass meetings around the campus, which would be held in preparation for the resumption of the protests as soon as the week begin... grin grin grin.. I had no time to go back to my room and change.

Immediately the pastor is done with his sermon, I'd leave... If he's taking longer than expected, I'd still leave... grin grin grin.. During the protests, I always made sure that I'm either in the middle or at the back in case the police start firing rubber bullets or spraying teargas... grin grin grin

The media was there and I don't know what happened this other time that I was caught on camera because I tried to avoid the cameras in anyway possible... My sister called to check up on me and asked if I was keeping safe and away from the protests, I lied and told her that I was... After we were done talking, she sent me a picture on WhatsApp, when I checked it I was shocked to see myself in the middle of the protest in my orange Nike hoodie, the same hoodie she bought for me.. grin grin grin.. The picture was on the local newspaper.

I quickly called her and started apologizing and begged her not to tell anyone, but then I remembered that my father is old fashioned and he still reads hardcopy newspapers... I switched off my phone for the entire day.. grin grin grin

The following day a communique from the VC come out stating that all the students must vacate the campus before 5pm and people started packing and getting ready to leave, but on the other hand, I started acting like a spoilt brat.. grin grin grin.. Instead of packing some of my clothes into my travel bag and head to the taxis like everyone else, I called the same sister I talked to the previous day and asked her to come and fetch me... She said she'll come after work and she knocks off at 4pm.

While I was in my room, I kept hearing voices down the passage, so I was convinced that there were still people around... I later decided to take a nap, my room was on the ground floor and I was woken up by my sister banging my room window... To my surprise, she told me that the main entrance door was locked and she couldn't get in, I didn't believe her at first and I went to check it out myself... To my surprise, everywhere in my res was quiet and everyone was gone, I checked the time and it was already past 5pm.

I tried opening the main entrance door and it was locked, I started panicking, I called the residence student assistant and she told me that she had left the campus, that I should contact the university control room to send security guards to come and unlock the door for me, and that their contact details were there on our residence guard room window... I waited for a while and one of the security supervisors came and set me free... I thought he would shout at me, but he was calm.

My sister was prevented from entering the compus with her car, she called me, but I forgot to remove my phone from silent mode and I didn't hear it... She had to walk to my residence... Just when I was about to leave my residence, a thunderstorm started and I only had one umbrella, but the wind was too much and the umbrella became useless, so I closed it... By the time we reached the university gate and got in the car, we were already wet.. The only thing I was concerned about was my phone and tablet, I didn't care about the rest.. grin grin grin.

On our way home, we were listening to a talk show on the radio and our VC was to be interviewed... During the interview, he stated that those students who were still on campus after 5pm will be faced with consequences... I thought about me and I was like damn! I'm doomed... I already imagined my law degree vanishing in front of my eyes... grin grin grin

We got home at around 7pm and upon getting there, I found my mom and dad standing at the veranda waiting, I just knew that it was about to go down because I've been avoiding them since I saw the picture of myself on the newspaper, on top of that I ended up getting locked up in my residence on campus... grin grin grin

They shouted me like never before and I cried like a baby... grin grin grin

Once the protests ended and we resumed back to school, people on campus started talking of how there was a girl that was locked up on campus during the fees must fall protests, they were making jokes about it and they wanted to know who she was... I have no idea how the news got out, sometimes I'd be standing next to some students busy talking about me, unaware that it was me... It was so embarrassing, my friends kept laughing at me for the entire year.. grin grin grin
