Alcohol is a particularly deceptive substance, and in my opinion fools a lot of folk. I would say 90% of people who drink alcohol are not aware of the negative effects.

This is because these effects are very subtle.

I am not referring to the obvious negative effects such as blatant alcoholism, binge drinking, or even extreme intoxication, which are indeed huge problems in themselves. I am referring to the subtle effects which most folk are completely unaware of.

Now, what I am about to explain is purely opinion, based on my own personal observations. I have battled with addiction issues all my life, with alcohol being one of the primary substances that I abused. I have also spent several years in rehab where I associated with both professionals in the field and the addicts themselves. Despite being affected myself I do find the whole topic of addiction in general very interesting and most complex. I do believe I understand more about this than most, particularly because I have really spent a lot of time studying it.

From my experience, I have come to understand some subtle effects that alcohol use produces, which many people may be unaware of.

The main effect which goes unnoticed is… “insensitivity”.

What I mean by that, is that a person who drinks alcohol will inevitably become insensitive to others. This is often so subtle that not only the person drinking, but also the people around the person drinking will not even notice (at first).

Even after one drink this effect will occur.

The reason this is important is because there are many many folk who believe themselves to be responsible drinkers and experience no harmful effects whatsoever. A couple of beers after work, a glass or two of wine over dinner, or a whiskey on the rocks while watching their favorite show in the evening. What’s the problem, right?

This group of people make up a large sector of society. It covers a lot of people. So many in fact that I’d estimate it to be the majority. And because it is so common this behavior has actually become the norm, and society itself has accepted it and even promoted and encouraged it, and perhaps caused it in the first place.

The problem is that this insensitivity effect is actually altering the brain chemistry. Over time, this results in actual brain damage, and it’s so subtle most people are not even noticing it.

What is actually happening is a kind of dampening of the senses. We all know what happens when we become intoxicated but it is often hard to notice the effects which occur before saturated intoxication.

If you ask somebody who drinks why they like to drink?, they will inevitably say something along the lines of… because it helps me to relax, or it’s a way of unwinding after work, or it just takes the edge off of a perhaps difficult time. They might say it helps to break the ice, or it simply goes hand in hand with having a laugh with friends.

Well… all of those reasons seem perfectly acceptable don’t they? But have you ever thought why it helps to relax, or why it helps to break the ice, or why it helps to de-stress?

The real reason you feel these “so called positive effects” is because you are essentially desensitizing yourself from reality. You aren’t feeling things as acutely anymore. You might think this is perfectly harmless but think again. What is really going on is… slowed reflexes, reduced coordination, warped thinking, poor judgement, impaired memory, impaired motor functions, and plenty more impairments. Even after just one drink, and it’s so subtle we don’t even notice it.

Now combine this with repeated exposure, if you do this every day what do you think will happen?

The brain becomes hard-wired to this kind of functioning. This means even when you are not drinking it will behave the same way as if you are drinking. So basically, you are training yourself to become less sensitive. and not only less sensitive in all the physical ways I mentioned above, but also less sensitive to emotional responses from others. You become less compassionate, less empathetic, less attentive, less comprehensive, less intelligent!

The biggest problem with all this is that because it is so subtle and happens so gradually that by the time your partner, or loved one finally does notice and has you up about it, or brings it to your attention, you will become defensive about it. In your eyes they are just being too sensitive or over-sensitive.

Is this starting to sound familiar now? Can you see the problem?

To summarize… alcohol is essentially restricting people of their potential. It basically stops people from reaching more meaningful relationships, understanding deeper meaning, emotion, in relationships and also in self. It is very subtle, and as I’ve already said several times, it is usually goes unnoticed. The thing is, if alcohol was not being used so much, our lives would be better in many many ways, and you would only notice this when alcohol is out of the equation all together for a lengthy amount of time.

Okay that’s my rant finished, and I haven’t even begun to talk about the kind of damage alcohol has when you drink more… that is another story all together and it is unpleasant. The more alcohol is used/abused the worse it becomes.

Of course it’s up to you whether or not you choose to drink in moderation, or any amount for that matter, but be prepared to sacrifice your sensitivity at the very least. Sure… to combat taxing stress, you might find the trade off quite reasonable, but I do hope most intelligent people would think twice before deciding to drink, and that they would choose moderation if indeed they choose any amount whatsoever. Just remember that even in moderation the trade off is on the table.

Basically alcohol is poison, and any amount of it is harmful. If people looked at it that way (instead of seeing it as something which is fine in moderation), they would be seeing a far more realistic big picture in general.
