A tragic but true story in a small village in Anambra Nigeria, lived a gentle man popularly known as Promise O. He carried within him a secret that weighed heavily on his heart - he was gay. In a community where such a truth was considered taboo, in a society where such a truth is considered taboo. Same-sex sexual activity is illegal and criminalized in Nigeria, with the federal government frowning upon it. Promise O must have lived in constant fear of discovery.
Promise O would have found solace in the company of his rumoured beloved, Chidi. News flew around that together, they shared a forbidden love that provided them with strength and comfort in the face of adversity. They reveled in stolen moments of tenderness, hidden away from prying eyes.

However, their happiness was short-lived. When sometime in early 2023, whispers spread through the village, rumors of their forbidden love reaching the ears of the Igwe, the traditional ruler. Fueled by outrage and a determination to maintain the village's traditions, the Igwe vowed to eradicate the perceived abomination from their midst.
One fateful night, as Promise O and Chidi sought refuge in each other's arms, their hiding place was discovered. The villagers, fueled by anger and bigotry, descended upon them with violence in their hearts. They were torn apart and forcibly brought before the Igwe, who condemned them with a chilling finality.

"Such abominations cannot be tolerated," the Igwe declared, his voice filled with venomous condemnation. "You have defied our traditions, and for that, you shall face the dire consequences."
Chidi, helpless and filled with despair, was led away, never to be seen again. Promise O, now marked as a pariah, was imprisoned within the village walls, his spirit shattered, and his hope extinguished. The villagers reveled in their perceived victory, confident that their traditions had been upheld.
One moonlit night, seizing a moment of opportunity, Promise O managed to escape his confines, i’m sure his heart was heavy with grief and longing. He fled into the night, leaving behind a village that had rejected him and a love that had been torn asunder.

Rumors of Promise O's demise spread quickly through the village. The people, relieved by what they believed to be his demise, rejoiced in their perceived victory over his forbidden love. But deep within the forests that surrounded the village, it was also rumored that promise O lived as a fugitive, his soul eternally haunted by the memory of his lost love.

Weeks passed, and Promise O remained where ever he has escaped to, his existence known only to the wind that whispered through the trees. The weight of his grief and the burden of his secret must have become his constant companions. The village carried on, ignorant of the impact they had wrought upon his life, some hope that one day people can actually live like they desire especially like its (same sex marriage) allowed in Europe and other parts of the world. His body was never found, but his spirit lingered as a reminder of the pain and suffering inflicted upon those who dared to love outside the bounds of societal expectations. The village, forever marred by the choices they made, bore the scars of a tragedy that may haunt them for generations to come.

I have a gay friend and I wouldn't change a thing about him... I enjoy every moment with him.
