Good day Peeps pls I need your advice on what I can do to compel BEDC to be taking readings from my meter instead of sending estimated billings.I have been having a running battle with them since the beginning of the year..they just refused to take the readings on my meter instead they wud be fixing estimated billings on my bill.They came to disconnect my line on Thursday insisting I must adhere to their new regime of estimated billings which I have rejected.Meanwhile I have never defaulted in making payments monthly by taking the readings personally on meter and doing the necessary calculations.Pls I need your advice on what to do .Thanks for your anticipated response.

Nigeria is a lawless country. Since they can't provide the new meter for you, sue them to court.

There is a schedule/list on the NERC website of the maximum amount an electricity company can charge per kwh on estimated billing. The amount varies depending on the company.

Many are not aware of the list and are being charged more than the maximum allowed by NERC.

1. Check the NERC maximum estimated billing rates for BEDC and compare what they are charging you on your bill with the maximum allowed by NERC.

2. If they are charging you more than necessary, go through your bills for the last 3 yrs or so, and add up all the excesses you have been charged over the period.

3. Write to BEDC manager drawing his/her attention to the overcharging. Request refund of the overcharge, and demand your bills conforms with Nerc rates going forward.

4. If the manager does not respond within 21 days, write another letter giving them 7 days final notice to respond to your claim, and warn that if they fail to respond you will file a complaint with NERC.

5. If the matter is not resolved to your satisfaction, send your complaint to NERC with all your evidence - copies of your contested bills and a covering letter. NERC has a specific team and procedure for estimated billing disputes, and they're proactive. The team's email address is on their website.

Usually, electricity distribution companies do not like to be reported to NERC, so they will often want to resolve the issues locally.

Anyway, once you write to them as suggested above, they will know you know your rights, and if the they have been overcharging you, they will quickly adjust your next month's bill in line with NERC stipulations. But make sure to take them to task on all previous overbilling and demand to be refunded.

These companies are making billions in illegal over estimation of billings because many people are not aware of their rights.

Hotplates should not be used on a prepaid meter. Better use gas to cook.
