Times are definitely not nice to Nigerians. The streets are not smiling. People are not happy. You could see from their sad faces.

I am an undergraduate working as a security guard at night to help myself financially.

So due to fuel situation and the economic effects, I have been trekking to and fro the place, because no money and the transport is very expensive now. Today, I didn't feel very strong to trek back to the place due to malaria seriously holding me down. I approached my neighbor who is earning over 100k+ salary, minus side hustling to help me with transport fare to go to work. Guess what? He started by laughing cheapishly. When he paused, he narrated how he trekked back from work on Friday, trekked to and fro work today being Monday and not sure how he'll get back to office tomorrow morning being Tuesday. That the new transport fare has eaten deeper into his small earning that even before middle of the month, the salary had long gone. Last night, the children drank Garri to go to bed and this morning, the children left to school drinking only Pap and he put only N100 Akara for each in their lunch boxes. Sad story. He added that due to the economic impact of fuel subsidy removal, retrenchment letters for 3 of his colleagues in the office are ready to be served by the end of the month, and more to go.

Who will rescue us, we don't know? Sad truth is that the money that will be generated from this subsidy removal will not be put to use to the benefit of the commoners. It's just a plot to generate more money for the elites/thieves.

Could you believe that nobody could borrow me N500 in the whole compound? Incredible.

Well, even when I wasn't feeling strong to trek coupled with all I'm passing through financially, I just had to trek which I did.

I picked up this job because instead of sleeping freely at night and when the rent expires, the landlord would come after me + plus all the bills heaped on me, I could rather spend the nights here reading my books, sleep (even though not as recommended) and still earn some money no matter how small.

Finally, I would say do well to help people when you can. People are going through a lot. Not untill the start falling in the street.

*In mama P. voice* - "God will see us through".

God bless all hard working Nigerians no matter the tough times we face.

The worst part is that this person may have voted for APC

He's earning 100k+ salary and married with kids. You're earning, what, 40k? Plus free accommodation and the usual tips. When you subtract the money spent doing his responsibilities as a family man, you'll find that you're not earning any different from him at the end of the month. If he says there's no money, best believe it

I posted the following yesterday on a similar thread, and some of you attacked me...!

Angelfrost:
If you are spending about 15,000 monthly on Transportation alone, then you'll probably have next to nothing to save tbh!!!

Honestly, any single man earning less than 150,000 monthly is already on a long thing!

...And any married man with at least 2 kids earning less than 350,000 monthly is on his own! undecided

When some of us who have done proper research speak or write about the reality of the times, kids still living in the comfort of parents and guardians insult us... Some of you try so hard to sugarcoat the sufferings of your fellow citizens because the people you support are in power!

Well... Body go tell una! When the poor finally reach their limits, the rest of you living in relative comfort go hear am!

The way politicians were shouting remove the subsidy remove the subsidy instantly showed me that the removal will be of no good to the general public. I knew they'll realize money from it and still loot it within themselves. Nothing extraordinary will come out of it.

Minjim:

I swear, it seems all government 's priority is to further inflict poverty on Nigerians till they commit sucide.

I can understand how heartless some people can be.
You remove subsidy and asked us to face the reality of hardship with no palliative programme to cushion the effect. Are you not not supposed to put the cushion effect in place for people to fall on before removing the subsidy?

Now, we are left stranded and only the rich are surviving. The trekking have done in this month. I've not done it b4. I didn't even think I can do it. And the effect will all fall on our body and productivity.

Maybe the aim is to kill off the very poor with hunger, depression, and suicide!

Left to UN and Bill Gates, that's a viable solution!

This is sad. And I quite sympathize with many trapped in such vicious cycles.

I understand that from a Nigerian cultural perspective, trekking is seen as a "lower class" poor thing to do. Even in my NYSC days way back, colleagues will go about associating any lengthy walks as "suffering". I think there needs to be a cultural shift to begin to view things differently. I never went to the Gym, but anytime I had the time to take long walks it was also a time to observe, deepen my thoughts on issues, and also exercise.

Nigeria needs to encourage a healthy biking culture too as found in most places in Europe. But there are no discernible bike lanes in Nigerian cities since people use those paths to sell stuff by the road side to survive. This is where government laws and policies encouraging this transport option can help. I mean not like the pump and dump Chinese style adoption of urban electric bikes and bike riding companies emerged only to fill a forgotten land fill in the end! --
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SEfwoqKRU8 --but more like a sustainable Dutch or Danish approach. There are no social stigmas to find millionaires riding bikes to work.

I suggested car pooling in a thread a while back. That is also an option for those sensitive to the sun.

I agree...Lord help us all!

In the UK they are blaming the govt for inflation that has just lasted for a year. All hands are on deck to vote out the Conservative Party next year

But you, in your infinite and all encompassing wisdom are saying the APC govt that took us from N140 to $1 all the way down to N750 to $1 is not to blame.

There must be a name that they call people like you.
