I've been battling this issue for weeks now, hoping I can get some help from the hospital. Unfortunately, I'm not seeing any positive outcomes. Thus why I've decided to open a thread and see if anyone has experienced this and willing to share their solution.

A friend recommended I create an account here and solicit some help. Nairaland people please help.

A bit of backstory.

So, I've been having my normal flow as usual until March this year. Happened that my flow was delayed for some days and when it finally decided to come, it showed up as spotting.

I spotted for close to two weeks and felt something was wrong. I visited the hospital and Dr prescribed duphaston for me for 7days. After completing the dosage, I noticed I started bleeding uncontrollable for 3days with heavy clots

The bleeding didn't stop till I got a different supplement for balancing hormones (actually a family member recommended it). The bleeding stopped but spotting surfaced again.

I went back to the hospital and Dr said I should do a hormonal profile test

I did and the result shows I have low progesterone. Dr confirmed that it wasn't pcos because I was suspecting it could be.

I did a couple of tests that showed it wasn't pcos

Pelvic scan result came out good
I didn't and have never had menstrual cramps (except once in like 6years)
Never missed my period
Never had hairs on my body or face
Never had water or whatever it's called on my breast

None of those symptoms

Dr insists it's a case of hormonal imbalance

Again, he gave me another dose of duphaston to take for two weeks

I've completed the dosage but I'm noticing again that I'm bleeding

Please what could be the cause?

Has anyone experienced this before?

Please help. This entire thing is making me lose my mind

Thank you @dominique

I noticed that's what he's trying to do. I've already told him off.

If they can't share the info here for everyone then I guess it's not useful.

Actually, you should know that frequent, unexplained bleeding between periods could be caused by health problems like miscarriage, a hormonal problem, infection, etc. In the case of infection, the spotting usually comes along with some discharge which could be whitish, yellowish or greenish. So you can rule out the possibility of your condition being caused by infection.

Well, the abnormal bleeding could be caused by some other health issues but your symptoms directly point at low progesterone. A low level of progesterone causes bleeding between your periods, irregular menstrual cycles, mood swings, and could affect fertility during childbearing years.

If you're to treat low progesterone, its proper treatment could be by progesterone supplementation or hormone therapy. The doctor should be able to give some prescription medications for your hormone therapy. Better still, you can try a federal hospital for your treatment.

A natural remedy can help resolve your progesterone problem. You will need to take supplements rich in vitamin B and C, Zinc to raise your progesterone level. And you manage stress well.

NB : If you begin to have a fever, dizziness, or pain as you're having abnormal bleeding (especially heavy bleeding), seek emergency medical care immediately.

I am sorry to hear about your health travails. Gynaecological problems are as old as biblical times, thus you not alone. You mentioned seeing a doctor without specifying a Gynaecologist. You do realise your condition would be better handled by one.

Your symptoms are consistent with low levels of progesterone. I agree with your Dr mere symptoms and low progesterone doesn't always translate to PCOS. Whilst PCOS sufferers do suffer low progesterone levels that affects their ability to ovulate it takes a bunch of other hormonal tests and scans to confirm its presence.

If your Dr did rule out PCOS means he ran other hormonal profiles for LH, FSH, Total and Free Testosterone, DHEAS, Prolactin, Androstenedione and even insulin resistance as recent PCOS research now points to insulin resistance as a culprit.

I'm sorry the drug dyhydrogesterone (Duphaston) didn't do you much good either. Often prescribed for a wide range of Gynaecological disorders like painful period, progesterone related troubles, endometriosis, miscarriages, infertility and utérine bleeding, sometimes for some people it gets to promote more vagina bleeding it was intended to treat.(Drugs for you)

Unfortunately you are not in Cameroon I would for free have offered to you one of my approved Medicinal Supplements brewed into capsules from a bunch of herbs. By the way I am a Pharmacognosist with a PhD in the field. Since you mention being on folic I would recommend you add a supplement with Chasteberry (Vitex). It is good at balancing progesterone falls at a gradual to sufficient level.

I'm currently reading up on vitex and how it can help with abnormal bleeding. I've seen tons of testimonials on YouTube on how effective it works. My only confusion right now is most users said one can't take it while on period which I guess I'm not allowed to use considering that I'm still bleeding.

Do you have any other suggestions(supplements) that can help or what do you recommend (maybe take the vitex regardless)?

I'm just confused and worried that I'm losing tons of blood. It's day 4 since I stopped duphaston and have been bleeding for 3days straight.

Looking forward to your response.

I wish I knew how to send you a free bottle of Fallovel so you could feel it's quick magic on your situation. I will make some enquiries though. Where in Nigeria are you located? (Town).

Vitex agnus-castus is good and comprises one of the ingredients I use for my hormonal balance supplement. I do blend it though with other potent herbs like Black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa), Cramp Bark (Viburnum opulus) , Black Haw (Viburnum prunifolium), Blue Cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides), Helonia (Chamaelirium luteum) Raspberry leaves (Rubus idaeus) etc.

If you can get a supplement from your area with a collection of two or more of the above herbs then you good to go. That said you definitely can start with Vitex. As a rule of thumb women using it to enhance ovulation are advised to skip the five days of menstrual flow. This shouldn't apply to you at this point

Without going into the nitty gritty Vitex works by decreasing the hormone prolactin which in turns helps to balance the estrogen - progesterone ratio. Vitex doesn't poséss phyto hormones that work directly on the ovaries. Instead it raises brain dopamine levels which blocks Prolactin levels, reduces FS hormones and raises the Luteinizing Hormone to raise progesterone and decrease estrogen.

I dont like that you losing much blood. If at some point you feel the need to revisit your gynaecologist for an emergency intervention don't hesitate. Vitex agnus-castus does take a little while to reap its benefits but when the set in, the results are near perfect and long lasting.

Thank you so much Dr

I find every part of your response helpful. I'll do some research before taking the next line of action.

But in the meantime, I'm taking zinc and vit c as someone suggested here and I'm seeing some improvements.

Thanks again for the help.

Hi,

Just wanted to give us a quick update on how I'm faring ( guess someone might need to use that info in the future)

So I started my vitamin supplementation last week just as someone on this thread recommended.

Although I did a bit of research before commencing.

Full details:

I saw a video on YouTube where someone said they were bleeding for 4months non-stop and literally did all the test their gynae recommended - yet nothing was found to be the root cause and drugs weren't even working

Happened that someone else recommended they take iron pills considering that the heavy bleeding can make them anemic. Surprisingly, they started the iron pills and their bleeding stopped.

After seeing that YouTube video, I jumped into more research on the relationship between vitamins and female hormones

From my research, I gathered that vitamins like iron, magnesium, zinc, b-complexes, and vit c are very essential for balancing hormones

So I started taking a combination of these (excluding magnesium) on Thursday.

I took them in their right dosage and to my utmost surprise, the bleeding stopped. It didn't stop abruptly though but it drastically reduced and gradually faded away in 3days.

I'm fully okay and back to my normal life.

Additional details
- The chest pain and back pain I got as side effects from duphaston has disappeared

- Severe headache I got as side effect has also gone

- Aggression, mood swings, and anxiety signs I got during the hormonal crisis are also gone

I feel so brand new and happy.

Thanks to everyone who came to my aid on this thread. I'm utterly grateful for your suggestion.

PS: will be starting my vitex supplement next month and hoping it helps stabilise everything

Thanks for sharing this. My wife is currently facing similar issue. I want to know if there is no relapse. I asked this because there was a time we treated it and it resurfaced after a week. Presently she is on vitamin e, c and folic acid. Pls I need you to guide us on the best type, dosage and the cost. Thanks

Hi dejai99

Sorry about your wife's condition.

To answer your question, there's always a relapse pending when the subject's hormone is fully balanced.

Women's cycle is a crazy thing and can always go on and off at intervals.

If she's having same issues like mine, please let her focus on vitamin supplementation.

She should try either of this:

1. Daravit woman: its a combination of Chaste berry and all essential vitamins. It has a dosage for non-period days and another dosage for period days. It will help balance her cycle

2. Vitex (Gaia brand). Some ladies swear on this product that it's the best thing after sliced bread for hormonal issues

3. A combination of Magnesium, Vit B6, Zinc, Vit c, and Folic acid. This also helps with balancing hormones ( progesterone levels)

Lastly, let her speak to naturopathic doctor. They are experts in handling hormonal issues.

I hope this helps.

Speaking of types, vitamins from nature'sway brand have proven to be more effective than others.

However, they can be very expensive. Most range between 8k to 10k per cup.

You should check jumia for prices

I really appreciate your quick response. She will start option 3 because she is already on vitamin and supplement regimen. We will just include magnesium and others.
But I want to ask, in your previous post that I quoted, you mentioned iron and vitamin b complex. While this one has no iron and b complex in your recommendation. Pls, what has changed?

Oops I lost track of this topic. I am glad to fall back on it to realise you have journeyed your way to good health through meticulous research on your condition. I'm glad you stumbled on the outstanding benefits of the micronutrient magnesium. Whilst it is difficult for healthy individuals on a balanced diet to be magnesium deficient needs may change over the course of life.

Magnesium has steadily found a place as a cornerstone in gynaecology. In women, there are various physiopathological conditions that may increase magnesium requirements, useful for both disease prevention and treatment. Magnesium use in women, both in terms of prevention and treatment, is extended to many health issues from PCOS to pre-menstrual syndrome, from pregnancy to menopause and beyond.

Steadily the importance of quality and safe natural alternatives to health are picking steam across the world with the internet giving many patients the power and knowledge to make informed decisions... Wishing you the best
