The neocon gambit to topple Putin and bring Russia to its knees has gone completely off the rails.

The plan: create an irresistible security threat for Russia, wait for it to react militarily, then smash it hard with a blitzkrieg of sanctions warfare. Crash the economy, destabilize internal politics, then wait for the collapse and the backlash against Putin.

Except the collapse and backlash never came. Russia experienced a galvanization so powerful that the vast majority of the country aligned with Putin and the rest purged themselves. Instead of destabilizing Russia, Putin was able to rapidly reorient the economy and unite the country behind the Special Military Operation.

The consequence is that Washington has gotten itself and NATO toadies stuck in an impossible quagmire, one that it can't escape without doing serious damage to NATO and the American Empire.

Until a bigger geopolitical blunder comes along, it will rank as the #1 own goal of the 21st Century.
