Nigeria was the only African country that competed in the first FIFA Women's World Cup in 1991. Coached by Jo Bonfrere, their squad comprised the following 18 players;

•Ann Chiejine (Goalkeeper)
•Diana Nwaiwu (Defender)
•Ngozi Ezeocha (Defender)
•Adaku Okoroafor (Forward)
•Omo-Love Branch (Defender)
•Nkechi Mbilitam (Midfielder)

•Chioma Ajunwa (Forward)
.Rita Nwadike (Forward)
•Ngozi Uche (Forward)
•Mavis Ogun (Defender)
•Gift Showemimo (Forward)
•Florence Omagbemi (Midfielder)
•Nkiru Okosieme (Midfielder)
•Phoebe Ebimiekumo (Defender)

•Ann Mukoro (Midfielder)
•Lydia Koyonda (Goalkeeper)
•Edith Eyuma (Defender)
•Rachael Yamala (Midfielder)

They didn't have a memorable tournament, as they finished bottom of their group, following a 4-0 defeat to Germany, a 1-0 defeat to Italy and a 2-0 defeat to Chinese Taipei.

Alongside USA, Brazil, Norway, Japan, Germany and Sweden, Nigeria is one of only 7 countries to have featured in all nine Women's World Cup competitions.

Their best performance so far was in 1999 when they reached the quarterfinals where they were eliminated 4-3 by Brazil after extra time. With 3 goals each, Rita Nwadike and Nkiru Okosieme are the joint top scorers at the World Cup.
