How much help have you given to a complete stranger before?
Well, for me I have not been blessed with the opportunity to have much money in my life, but grew up from a family blessed with much to eat. So I was not lacking in terms of food because my parents were farmers.

So I gave food stuffs most of the time to friends and strangers as well.

So giving means different things to different people.

So let me tell you a short experience how I gave a complete stranger some food.

Few years ago, my family traveled briefly so I was the only one at home. I decided to cook rice and stew. Just before the food was done, a complete stranger came and told me that he was stranded. He further stated that, he came all the way from Nasarawa to do menial jobs here in Port Harcourt, but the person who brought him could not provide the tools needed for him to start the cobbler job so he has been sleeping at the Mosque.

He asked me if I can help him with some food. So I quickly went into the kitchen and got him a plate of rice and stew. I could see the joy and happiness on his face.

After eating, I gave him water. He was grateful.

He left afterwards, I was happy to be of help to a complete stranger.

If I am to monetize the plate of rice perhaps it would not be anything above N400, but it could be quite much to a stranger in need.

Maybe that food could be worth several thousands at that moment.

So can you share your experiences how you have been of help to a complete stranger.

We handle cases of people like you who walk about with such naive notion only to find themselves crying and seeking for who to track their assailants over their carelessness & sheer stupidity which could have been avoided in the first place. The more careless people like you, the more money for security professionals so please keep it up!

There is something called SAFETY & PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES. This ensures that the possibility of something negative happening is reduced (not totally eliminated). On the other hand the CARELESSNESS of bringing a stranger into your house greatly improves the possibility of negative occurrence like house mapping, rape, robbery and even death.

You want to argue? Feel free. You can be careless and ignore your personal safety if you wish, your choice.

Countless of people are robbed on a daily basis. Some at home, work, cars etc.
While some people leave their houses unlocked and went to work and came back with everything intact.

If you will be robbed, you will be robbed.
If you want to advertise your business. Leave those people who want to be charitable.
Someone reported that Peter Obi phones were stolen in Court, at the electoral tribunal.
And I was like even in Court?

I've helped strangers but I'll talk about the help I received as a stranger.

During my Japa dream days I boldly boarded a vehicle heading to Togo not knowing I didn't have enough money to take me to my intended destination. A naija guy that alighted somewhere in Benin republic or Togo looked at me and decided to to give me all the remaining naira with him as he was not going to need them. Tears filled my eyes. That his money helped to take me as far as Ghana after conversion at Aflao border. The rest is history.

Help strangers if you can. You might be the stranger in need of help someday.

Okay let's roll with the childish & myopic notions you are trying so hard to promote.

If you will die, you will die. Whether you take care or not right? Why don't you tie your eyes and walk into the expressway? To reduce the chances of getting hit by a car?

If you will be robbed, you will be robbed. But you lock your doors at night to reduce the chances of being robbed?

A child will be what he will be. But your parents sent you to school to reduce the chances of you growing up stupid, illiterate and socially awkward or they just wanted to waste money?

Please state where I said you should not be charitable?
point out where I told you that personal safety is equal to total safety?
You saw me advertising? Please, What is my profession?

Yes, and I will share a few instances.

It was Fall of 2011, I met a guy who came to the church I was attending for the first time. After church, he said he wanted to know my place and visit my university since he was attending the other university in town. We got to my place, I cooked and while discussing, he opened up he was having accommodation issues and luckily, I was living in a one bedroom apartment so I told him he could move in.

Ten years later, I needed help and he came through for me. Although he also sold me a lemon but I would rather say I reaped the benefit of the good I did.

Another instance was in Fall 2012. I had worked at the International Welcoming Center in the Summer and part of my job duties was attending to calls and registering students for the Fall Orientation. Someone called and had a Ghanian accent so we discussed more and I promised introducing him to another Ghanian graduate student I knew on Campus. Unfortunately, I guess he banked on staying with the Ghanian student pending when he resolved his accommodation and that one had made no plans for him. The Ghanian guy picked him up from the airport and when he realized the new guy had no place to stay, he called me to come sort my mess since I introduced him to the new guy. I was lucky my flat mates were my roommates from Ife whom I facilitated their admission. I called and told them someone was going to be sharing my room and they had no issues with it.

About five years later, I read on the student thread about someone going to my university. I reached out to him and he said he wasn't having a place to stay. I called the guy I helped to ask if he could help and he was quick to.

Many more instances I cannot count. All I can say is allow your heart/God to lead you.

I suppose "help" has to be defined. Nothing out of the ordinary of grandiose. Housing a stranded stranger for the night or buying a meal for some life-beaten bloke who accosts one on the road isn't out of the ordinary.

I can't count. It's part of being humane and expressing our humanity.

But I suppose we've become so indifferent as humans off the camera that these little acts of kindness which inherently make us human seem saintly.

Let me share my little experience here

It all started during the “No cash era” a woman who has her house opposite my room window gave birth to a new born baby, we don’t use to talk though she greeted me once , i was so happy when I heard she gave birth and I was thinking what little thing I can do to help the woman, I usually heard her sending her other kids to buy 50naira pampers across the street, on the 8 days I looked for cash and went to a store bought a big jumbo size of pampers I waited till night and went across my window to present the pampers to this woman, guess what happened
This woman denied ever knowing me, rejected the pampers and tagged me as a ritualist, damn I was so embarrassed.
I packed out of the environment few months later and vowed never to render anyone help again in my life.
The pampers is still sitting in my cabinet till tomorrow.

Let me also talk about the one help I received here on nairaland

When I moved away from home and rented my first apartment, I had nothing not even a mat to sleep on, I came here on nairaland and asked for help, lots of people said nasty words on my post but a man like me asked for my account number and sent me 5k, I don’t know the man but I pray may God bless him more abundantly.

That's typical Nigerian mentality....always quick to brand someone who has some extra cash to throw around as fetish and diabolical. This is how people end up loosing help from kind-hearted individuals.

I've helped strangers alot and I love helping anonymously. God said help with the right hand in such a way that the left hand won't know. I hate loudness and too much appreciation irritates me,so I like being on a very low something. I have received help severally from strangers especially men 😂

These little acts shouldn't be looked upon as saintly acts. However, this is to remind us those little acts of kindness go a long way in uplifting people who are in need.

To remind us to continue in the act of kindness always.

It pays to do so.
