Taiwo Awoniyi made history when he scored his fastest ever English Premier League goal against Manchester United to make it his seventh consecutive scoring match for Nottingham Forest but it was not enough to secure even a point as they went down 3-2 at home on Saturday.

Just one minute and 6 seconds into the match, Awoniyi raced at the United goal at top speed and shrugged off a Rashford challenge before prodding the ball beyond United keeper, Andre Onana, to give Forest a shock lead. Forest’s dominance continued when Willy Boly doubled their advantage from a set piece.

However, the hosts recovered to mount an impressive fightback. Goals from Christian Eriksen and Casemiro brought United level before Bruno Fernandes’ penalty sealed the three points after Joe Worrall’s dismissal.

Despite Awoniyi’s record-breaking opener, Forest were unable to hold on for a deserved share of the spoils. His goal, however, makes him only the third African player to score in seven successive EPL games, after Emmanuel Adebayor and Mohamed Salah.

The 25-year-old striker has been a live-wire for Forest following his move from Union Berlin, but manager Steve Cooper will be disappointed his side left empty-handed after controlling much of the first half.

United deserve credit for showing resilience to come from behind twice against a Forest side that caused them numerous problems, especially on the counterattack. Up next for them is a testy tie against Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday while Forest are in the EFL Cup against Burnley.
