How Religious Were Nigerians In The '60s To '80s? by Tobdek: 5:24pm On Sep 09, 2023
When Tinubu won the presidential election in May, a lot of folks on Twitter predicted that there would be an increase in religious activities because people would need hope to get through the next 4-8 years. As evidenced by the Buhari administration, this is true. Even online, there was the Hallelujah challenge, the Jesus status challenge and all sorts. Still nothing changed. Nigeria only got worse.

Many prosperous countries seem to have a lackadaisical attitude to religion. It makes me wonder how religious Nigerians were when things were still a bit okay in this country.

I guess unemployment pushed Nigerians to look towards God for solution. When factories were working three shifts and weekends offer more pay due to overtime.I wonder where you will have the strength to do vigil or attend Sunday services regularly

As far as I know Nigerians have pretty much always been religious, whether it was devotion to the pagan gods of our forebears or the Abrahamic god, its always been there. The "fervor" is what has taking on dark overtones, more violence, more exploitation of congregants, more intolerance, etc. Those things are what have set apart those times from more recent times.
