Enugu Signs Electricity Bill Into Law, Targets 30 Billion USD Economy by AlexBells(m): 10:32pm On Sep 17, 2023
I had always believed that with the abundance of energy resources in the form of coal, gas and crude oil all available in Enugu in comercial quantities, that Enugu is supposed to be an energy and electricity hub and Today
the executive governor of Enugu state has not just passed the electricity bill, he also aimed to move Enugu economy from 4.4 to 30 billion USD.

The Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, Friday, signed into law, the Enugu State Electricity Bill, describing it as a major step towards economic growth and making the state the premier destination for investment, business, tourism, and living.

Speaking at the event, which took place at the Government House, Enugu, Dr. Mbah said the quest by his administration to build Enugu State’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion would translate to a pipe dream without adequate and stable power supply, hence the need for the Electricity Bill, which was transmitted to the House of Assembly about a fortnight ago.

He equally commended the leadership and members the House of Assembly for the expeditious passage of the Bill and for their partnership with the government across party lines for the good of Enugu State.

“As you know, following the Constitutional Amendment and the Electricity Act of 2023, electricity is now on the concurrent list. This will now enable us to play in all the value chain of the electricity industry.

“So, Enugu State has spared no time in making sure that we create our own electricity market. That is the crux of this law.

“We are now able to play in the generation, transmission, and distribution segments of the electricity market.

“We are also, through our regulatory commission, which this Law has given us power to create, going to be able to regulate the activities of these players – the generation, transmission, and distribution companies that will flow from it.

“So, this is a significant and very important Law towards the achievement of the Enugu of our dreams because the development and growth of Enugu will all be predicated on the platter that this law has created. You cannot talk about industry or private sector investment if you don’t have electricity or power.

“Enugu, under our administration, is designed and indeed prepared to be the premier destination for investment and this law is part of the enablers.

“Therefore, we thank members of the Enugu State House of Assembly for the expeditious way they treated this Bill, which has become Law today by this assent”, the governor stated.

The signing was witnessed by the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Uchenna Ugwu, represented by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Ezenta Ezeani; the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kingsley Udeh; the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, among other state functionaries.

Someone should ask this mugu governor why he reviewed the price of obtaining C of O from 1k per square meter to 10k per square meter if he really want Enugu development. 500 square meter land will now cost 5million naira for C of O

He is on a mission to retrieve the money he used to buy PDP ticket. Thief

10k per square meter means if you buy 1000 square meter land at the rate of 1milion naira, you will need 10million naira for C of O

Okay, now I understand, that's really outrageous but it would have advantage, since this C of O gives ownership of the land for about 99 years, it is worth that's really improving land value in the state.

Enugu state is not the state alone that have land. How can this attract investment? There are other states where investors can go and buy. We should be more concerned in bringing people to invest and develop our land.

Creating an enabling environment is more important to business than the cost of land, people would rather buy a plot of land for 1 million USD in New York City or Silicon valley than buy 400K USD in Alaska, Mba is a busines guru, enough of middle class buying up high class areas just to build apartments and disjointed stores, that's great but we already have a lot of that, let real investors come in, if he can create a business district that would be a hit.

If Ndigbo is ready, Enugu coal mines can be revitalised by building a new coal powered electricity plant somewhere around 9th Mile area. The new power plant gets coal supply from the nearby mines, and energy generated can be sold to many states in South Eastern Nigeria.

Coal deposit in Enugu can be used to power 2 electricity plants with a total capacity of not less than 2,000 Megawatts; this could be more than all the current electricity demand in 5 south east states.

We need to learn what Germans did after the second world war. The coal mines in Ruhr area of Germany ( Dortmund, Cologne area) was used to power German industries to success after the war.

Once again, if we are serious, we have the resources to power Igboland to prosperity.

South East is currently on track and Enugu could be the electricity hub, the Good part is that Enugu will not just be supplying Enugu, but also Benue and part of Kogi and Ebonyi, I left out Anambra, Abia and Imo becuase of the abundance gas there and also the proximity of Anambra to Delta where Trancorp power is situated, however currently transcorp is feeding into the national grid.

You are just bittered and you can chose the color of your rope, in case you need to hang your clothes. How can you compare what Oti is doing to what Mba is doing, Aba has already been industrialised, Enugu roads has already been done by previous administrations.

Building a business friendly environment and building roads are two different ball games, one takes planning and slower execution the other takes contractors and instant funding. I didn't vote for MBA and I don't care about his party but if he don't fight the people like he tried with Monday, he is in track in my book

We are talking about priorities, stop talking like an idiot, I will prioritize economic and industrial roadmap to spending huge on roads like it an emergency. Enugu roads especially Enugu city roads are manageable if he can concentrate on water availability and industry, the roads can serve for the time being, I’m not suggesting abandoning the roads completely but priority needs to be given to industry and water availability in Enugu.

Your comments is filled with insults because you are poorly brought up and cannot engage someone in a constructive argument. It's either you are paid to defend the idiotic governor or you are an animal with hidden agenda.

Who is talking about promises, if you don’t have money for land don’t buy, no one is begging you, you are the one foaming in the mouth, here. If you just a bitter opposition you don’t deserve a spec of decorum from me, mischiefs fools don’t deserve that.

Buy a ticket and become a councilor, give your father’s land out for free, measures like that protect indigenous land owners, go build in your industry in your ancestral land or make your budget huge enough or at l least rent or lease, Between the post was about Electricity and economy, if you think cheap land builds economy, well to shock you it don’t it attract poor people or at best middle class we already have enough of that in Enugu, go to Niger State or Niger Republic thats where you belong with the cheap land mentality

Nobody is talking about cheap land here. Someone has bought the land and you ask him to pay such amount for C of O.

Enugu lands are already costly. Before now, each square meter is 1000 for C of O. Meaning when you bought 1000square meter, you pay 1 million with adjoining charges which amount to like 1.5millon naira. This is after buying land. Different from community levy. Different from LGA levy. Different from Capital development. In fact, when you buy 10millon naira land, you need extra 4 million naira to develop it before now. But now, you will need nothing less than 15million if you must go for C of O.

I'm very sure you cannot even buy 2milion naira land as you reply me. Why are you forming enermy of the people?

You go read the constitution, ignorance is not an excuse to the law, you buy the land from the state not from the individual, by Nigerian constitution all lands belongs to the state. So the price the individual land owner sells doesn’t have anything to do with the price state sells which is through the C of O, the state is telling you the official price of a parcel of land in Enugu and you are foaming, keep foaming when you cross your boundary you would understand.

Hold your ancestral land tight that’s all the above says cause that’s the only thing that would give you access to rightful ownership of land in the near future if you chose to remain poor.

Ehen go to where you can buy cheap land, nobody is complaining. The state is holding the land in trust for the people, while you can buy from the people you need to pay also while you buy from the government. What makes you think current landholders can't also build industries. Abeg if you didn't inherit land, not your fault, if you fail to make money to buy yours that's your fault.

There's no cheap land for anybody in Enugu the value starts from the land so let people learn to develop their lands than sell, those buying for development no get two heads. Don't build house for anybody, they have their hands, build an enabling industrial environment and watch the people build in their lands.
