A RYANAIR plane with 200 passengers on board had to turn back after tape used to patch up a pilot's window came loose.

Passengers watched in horror as ground crew put the tape around the edge of the windscreen shortly before take-off from Stansted, Essex, to Riga, Latvia.

The Irish Aviation Authority said the tape was being used as an extra precaution to secure a new window seal.

Ryanair insists normal procedures were followed throughout, and there was no danger to passengers or crew.

  First of all, Ryanair is not British but Irish.
  What the repair technicians did was not as silly as the news made it seem, those who know about aircraft know fully well that the air inside aeroplanes is pressurised just like vehicle tyres, and therefore, those technician know better than to expect an ordinary piece of tape to secure a wind-shield window strong enough to hold extreme presure compressed air from gushing out of the plane.
  And having given my perspective, i do agree with this explanation: "The Irish Aviation Authority said the tape was being used as an extra precaution to secure a new window seal".

I can imagine if this was Chanchangi airlines, this story would have made the front page and run into 20 pages full of hateful unpatriotic remarks. But na oyinbo do am then it must be ok.

There was an incident involving an airline (can't recall the name) where a technician who could not read English failed to secure a hatch close to the tail of the plane during refuelling.

20 minutes after take-off, the hatch came off and ripped away a section of the aircraft when the air decompressed, sending passengers flying into the air.

If a plane just had a window seal replaced, should you apply tape to it seconds before a plane loaded with passengers was due for take-off? How may tragedies have to occur because of these cost-cutting measures?

And yes, if it was a Nigerian airline, it would have made front-page news.

even Monarch that is bit a posh than them, you can still fly all inclusive (Flight & Hotel) to Europe with less that 150 bucks for couple

I said towing Van you are talking a another thing, My dear I know those specially designed towing vehicles that latch on to the front landing gear and tow large and small aircrafts alike to the runway or to a certain point, I dont travel often (except you count Chisco and Ekene Dili Chukwu transport from Nnewi to Upper Iweka and to Ugu hausa) but if you had cooled down to "Understand" my post you would have noticed the word VAN!! Yess Towing Van. The type that tows cars!! Na ehn dem tie rope to this Chachangi 737 abi na Bombadier then connect am to two vans dey tow am commot from runway to clear road so that Aeroplane go land,

Or is it the Okada Air in the 90's wey spoil for tarmac and instead of towing it off, them put "C" caution sign for front and back leave am there commot,

Now no jokes, in 2007, Bellview actually used gum to hold up the panel above my seat where the oxygen mask is supposed to drop down from incase of loss of cabin pressure, and this was in business class o!! And lest I forget, my seat was perpetually in recline positio as it couldnt/wouldnt stay upright!

Yeah, it is not towing van as werepeLeri have said. But if truly, bellview took their tyre to a road side vulcanizer for maintenance, then that is suicide.

That notwithstanding, what Ryanair did was very unprofessional in the industry. If they knew the wind shield was not strong enough or not well clipped to the aircraft as to withstand the pressure inside (or from outside) the cabin, proper maintenance job should be carried out instead of relying on some tapes! And this is where I disagree with Vicjustice and the Irish Aviation Authority, as their stand suggests that all aircrafts should be taped as an extra precautionary measure.

Granted, they are technologically more advance than us, in a broad sense but does that make them infallible, super-human or immune to mistakes or foolish behavior?

Imagine:
1.)They just fixed a window => The seal needs time to dry-up and be firm enough to withstand pressure.
Any reasonable airline that cherishes human life over profit will ground that plane for a day or at least some hours. RYAN AIR PUT IT IN THE AIR!

2.) They used Tape to secure it (as an extra precaution)  => By doing this, it shows they already knew or had the premonition that the seal has not harden enough to withstand the pressure. But they careless about human lives but would rather gamble with passenger lives!

3.)That the Tape started coming-off, 20mnutes into the flight => our fears in (1) and (2) above are justified!
Like a former Pilot on-board that flight said: The Pilot could have been sucked-out of the plane in mid-air (That was a former Pilot talking, not me and you that have never flown a plane so, dont start to prove or act smarter!)

4.) Being a "budget airline" is NOT AN EXCUSE to put people's life at risk, in such a manner!
Something "a few hours wait" could have resolved (and to think that the Pilot still went-on to abort the flight and they lost the same time (or even more hours) that they were trying to save!
Reducing "cost of ticket" is an economic decision to attract more passengers so you can "make-up" the perceived loss in income, from "Volume Trading"! Its not by force and it not a license for attempted murder!

In all these, all we could hear our "black brothers" say is "as long as it is Onyebeeke people doing the stupewdity, nothing spoil!
You see? You see what "INFERIORITY COMPLEX" does to human mind?

Like some have said, if it was Chachnagi or Bellview Airlines, my people will be howling all over the place like foxes and hyenas, hyperventilating about how savage and crude Nigerians are!
