A tragedy unfolded in Lewiston, Maine, when an Army reservist, Robert Card, went on a shooting spree, killing 18 people at a bowling alley and a bar. The search for Card, who had evaded authorities for two days, ended when he was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot near the Androscoggin River in Lisbon Falls. Maine Department of Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck said Card was found at 7:45 p.m. near the Androscoggin River, about 8 miles (13 kilometers) southeast of where the second shooting occurred Wednesday evening. He declined to divulge the location but an official said the body was at a recycling center from which Card had been fired.
Governor Janet Mills expressed relief at the news of Card's death, while residents like April Stevens, who knew one of the victims, felt a mix of relief and sorrow, acknowledging the immense pain caused by the shootings.
This incident, the deadliest in Maine's history, shocked a state known for its low crime rate, with only 29 killings in all of the previous year. Card, a 40-year-old Army reservist from Bowdoin, had undergone a mental health evaluation the previous summer after displaying erratic behavior during training.
