Ncc Warns Telecom Firms- Mtn, Airtel And Globacom

Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has issued a warning to three major Nigerian telecom operators, asking them to tackle their poor quality of service by end of November or face suspension which would include stoppage from sales of SIM cards.

The commission said the three operators have fallen short of the key performance indicators it set to determine operators' level of improvement on quality of service.Part of the Key Performance indicators measured by the Commission included Call Set Up Success Rate, Call Completion Rate, Stand Alone Dedicated Control Channel and Handover Success Rate.

The commission, however, gave the three operators the benefit of getting their acts right in 30 days, effective from November 1, or risk the big stick which the commission have threatened to wield.

Making more clarification on the issue, Head, Media & Public Relations of NCC, Mr Reuben Muoka, said : "This deadline follows a dismal performance by the three operators on quality of service from the result of an independent monitoring carried out by the commission across the country which showed that all the three operators failed to meet with four key performance indicators that are crucial for quality of service improvements as set by the commission."

"Consequently, the Commission has notified the three operators of its intention to issue a direction that with effect from November 30, 2011, any of the operators that fail to meet the targets will be barred from further sale of its SIM Cards or addition of any new subscriber to its network. Any new SIM card sold, or additional subscriber added to the network in contravention of the direction, will attract a penalty of N1,000,000 ( One Million Naira) per subscriber added".

The Commission in a notice of intention to issue the direction to the operators, also told the three operators that at the expiration of the 30-day deadline, it will strictly enforce the impending direction whose contravention will attract a penalty of N5,000,000 ( Five Million Naira), and additional N500,000( Five Hundred Thousand Naira) per day that such contravention persists.


Apparently to ensure that the operators do not take its threat with levity, the commission said that failure of any of the operators to meet the quality of service targets from November 30, 2011 will attract a fine of N500,000 (Five Hundred Thousand Naira) for every month of failure.

Etisalat needs to be warned as well, I get too many dropped calls on their network and browsing on the Gaga with EasyBlaze has been near impossible angry .

Pls guys, I have been thinking lately about buying etisalat go gaga android. Is it worth it? My NOKIA X3-02 touch screen has refused to work for over 2months now. Went to NOKIA CUSTOMER CONTACT, but them no get solution for my phone. Biko guys, is anybody using etisalat go gaga android on this forum? If there's any, I need your candid advise based on EXPERIENCE. Thanx!

I wish they can put their threats into action.

The worst network in Nigeria now is MTN. They are fraudulent. Customer service zero. I wish they can be de-registered and sent packing from Nigeria. But the corrupt rulers are sharing from their fraud.

I am a very difficult person to impress but the GAGA has impressed me so far. If you get it on a solid wifi connection it is really good! Etisalat had been really bad these past days. Right now I am dowbloading Apps from Android Market on Etisalat Network. It has been quite good today. The truth is this- When you compare the GAGA against Blackberry Curve, they both have advantages and disadvantages. However, I think the GAGA edges in terms of its cost-benefit analysis especially if you are not into pinging or chatting like me.

what you don't understand is that they don't make money from your calls they make their money when you purchase their CARDS/RECHARGE CARDS. if we should stop buying their CARDS then we will get them.

Guys, you need to understand that nobody set up a multi billion naira investment just do delibrately frustrates the very core of the business survival. However, there has been a very stiff competition between the operators big enough to put the operators on there feet.
you should know that the operators spend millions of dollars to ensure that customer get best quality of service, but this effort are being sabotaged by the "nigerian factors" that you and i are aware of. for example.

continuous generator thefts in major high traffic sites which directly affect the network.
continuos diesel thefts of all site belonging to this operators
continuous and delibrate vandalisation of fibre facilities by thefts and miscreants.

power cut in just one site will cause a series of network issues which they will need to trace and fix, we will have perfect networks if we have a good goverment settle dis challenge.

you will not set up a business just to do everything to frustrate your out customers, it doesnt make sense,

Working on the premises that the network operators aren't fools, their primary motive is to make money, providing a good service is relative.The "obstacles" to business in Nigeria were well known - Government has given them the licence to operate telecoms services in Nigeria. Do you want government to hold their hand while they do it as well?

How do you explain poor to non-existent Customer Service? What about offering/advertising services but not being able to fulfill them?

i generally laugh when i hear people post things like this

Guys, you all need to understand the networks make their money upfront before you make your call, once the major distributors buy the recharge card from them they have made their money, whether u make a call or u dont make a call doesnt mean anything to them

NCC is totally ineffective. I'm not sure why they exist as if they didn't, we probably wouldn't notice the difference.

I will tell you what will happen: in the background, envelopes will change hands. This time next month we will either hear nothing further about this or we will then be told that the named networks have improved when in fact they haven't done a thing.
