I saw a this thread on front page
https://www.nairaland.com/7911694/should-children-parents-retirement-plan

This above thread generated a lot of mixed reactions from Nairalanders, many support the fact that children should be parents retirement plan while some were against it, blaming the dead woman for not saving enough to take care of herself after retirement.

In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with children being parents retirement plan, except in a situations where the parents were not responsible when they were young.
A responsible father or mother who gave everything they had and tried their best to raise a child should enjoy the fruit of their labour at an old age.
Your parents sent you to school, fed you, clothed and housed you till you become independent and in most cases some parents gave everything they have to raise their children.
I will use myself as an example, my mum gave everything she had to make me and my siblings become successful in life, she worked she toiled without getting tired till she saw us all through school.
If she hadn't put all her best in training us she would have saved and prepare for her retirement age.
After retirement she still took up a casual work in a private organization, she is above 60 years and I was always sad with the fact that my mum still work to feed herself and get money without relying on her children.
Meanwhile I feel my siblings though they are trying but they are not doing enough to take care of my mum.
I am jobless at the moment but when I had a job I was never happy with her working and I was sending her money sometimes every three days or weekly, meanwhile my older siblings who are okay and doing well only send money to her occasionally or when she asks, my mum is someone who rarely ask her children for money except she has no other choice.
Sometimes my mum takes loan to clear off some bills this pains me deeply because she has a child who could be sending her money every day without stress but they don't do enough for her.
This breaks my heart as I type and my eyes are literally teary, because I know how difficult thing could be for her sometimes.
Now she no longer work at the private firm due to some reasons and some times when I call her & she says she doesn't have money I feel really sad for a woman who tried so much for us.
She should not be working after retirement, she has a medicine shop even the shop is not well stocked, it pains me a lot because I feel two of my older siblings that are doing well should stock her shop for her, my mum doesn't like sitting idly.
Now I am handicapped I lost my job I can't help her and it breaks my heart.

In conclusion when your parents put in everything to make sure you succeed in life when they were young you should pay them back when they are old. Therefore if your parents who saw you through school see you as a retirement plan there is nothing wrong with it.
As long as they were not deadbeat when they were younger.
it was their responsibility to take care of you when you were young and it your responsibility to take care of them when they are old.

Rubbish.

Your parents chose to bring you into this world by fucking each other. You are their responsibility both legally and morally.

You didn't choose your parents so they are not your responsibility. You can help them if you want to - nobody can make you. Your responsibility is to your own children and if you don't want to be responsible to them, don't bring any in.

Chikena!

Why aren't Tinubu, Atiku, Dangote, Bill Gates, Obama, Putin, Warren Buffett & co depending on their children in their old age?

The difference is poverty.
Make money and leave your innocent children alone.

Sometimes it is the sacrifice they made for you that caused their poverty and now that you their fruit is successful you should try to take care of them.
That's your opinion tho.

May we not give birth to heartless children
Caring for your parents at an old age is not a big deal.

Some parents make sacrifices to see their children succeed

No

Children should not be the retirement benefits of parents. In fact that mentality creates generational poverty.

As you are training your child, also plan for your retirement.

For those who are shallow thinkers, I am not saying don't give your parents or support them at old age, I am saying that parents should not depend on their children totally in old age.

If your child gives you fine if not don't even expect it and make it part of your plans.

Sometimes your child will even depend on you many years after graduation or barely surviving after 15 yrs of graduation.

So it's a huge gamble esp in Nigeria
