Dear Christians, Would You Kindly Explain This? by Tajbol4splend(m): 4:55pm On Nov 15, 2023
I am a Yoruba Muslim but I have attended a lot of Christians friends' weddings, so I would like to ask.

Is it biblical for the pastor to ask if any third party stands against the Union of husband and wife?

And if anyone should say they stand against it, would the wedding be void and the marriage will not take place, I mean is that the end?

What is the significance of the third party, I mean why should it matter what they think?

If either of the intending couple is married and hide it from the new one he or she is intending to marry.
Christianity DO NOT accept polygamy

There could be an issue with one of the parties. The man for instance could be legally married and even if he is separated from his spouse,he cannot marry legally until his divorce is finalized.
If any third party should object in such cases(there have been a few cases),the marriage is suspended.Usually, the pastor will call the couple and the person objecting to the office and see if it's an issue that can be resolved there,if not the ceremony will end.

First tell us the significance or importance of u being a yoruba Muslim to the question you asked... U could have asked the question without emphasizing ur Yoruba Muslim status...

Polygamy, Underage marriage and Hypnotism is not welcome in a Christian marriage so if a spouse is already married, underage or hypnotized the third party has the right to speak up before they are joined together in the name of our now reigning king Christ Jesus! undecided

.it's not issue of religion but way to conduct marriage in Nigeria, go to registry they will say the same thing for both Christian and Muslims that come thr for marriage.

They are saying that incase if such person married before or for whatever reason which may include deceit or illegalities.

U re not aware of it in ur own religion, because they hardly conduct marriage in Islamic way.

The culture of asking if any one have anything against the union is not found in the Bible but it is an aplmicaiof common sense.

The purpose is to publicly verify that neither the bride not the groom have not committed sacrileges like
1. Having another prior wives
2. Carrying the pregnancy of another man
3. Either party being a criminal
4. The man have done abortion for another girl or causing other lust related harm etc

Those who have the reasons would state it.
The wedding would be suspended until verification has taken place.

But it is not found anywhere in the bible

It is. Deuteronomy 25:1

The marrying official is become a Judge and the venue of the marriage, a Court Thus, The Law and Court (God's Law called Natural Law and it's Court) wants to be certain that all righteousness (conditions precedent) have been fulfilled before granting the approval of marriage.

Why did Abraham insisted that His son mustn't marry among Canaanites? Genesis 24:2-4
Why did Isaac and Rebecca got upset when Esau marry Canaanite girls? Genesis 26:34-35
Why did God insisted that Israelites must not marry among the Canaanites? Deuteronomy 7:3

Back in Bible times the only way to be certain that both spouses are good to go as husband and wife is when both parents consented to the marriage. So the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob have laid the foundation to question any marriage alliance that's not built on solid foundation.

The God of Abraham, Abraham himself and Isaac his son all objected to marriage alliance with certain people so it's SCRIPTURAL to be sure if anyone is ready to OBJECT to a marriage proposal.

God set the standard so His representative will be the one to make sure those getting married in His name are called to order.

So, you are following traditions of men as you cannot find a single scripture to back up your assertion!

Is it where the standard was set word for word that you want or how scriptural is the heritage?

Before Moses there was no written law that says:
"you must not sleep with another man's wife"

Yet Joseph refused to sleep with Potiphar's wife.

WHY?

Because the tradition says the wife must be one approved by the parents.

So if you feel the tradition Abraham passed on to Isaac which was passed on to Jacob is men's tradition then there's no need claiming you're one of Abraham's seed. Galatians 3:29

You hate to be corrected when you err!

What has Adam and Eve got to do with this?

If scrutiny regarding marriage was from Adam will people be commiting fornication and adultery?

I showed you how the tradition started from Abraham the first human to object to marriage alliance with people who don't share his belief, as at the time Abraham objected to marrying from Canaan can you point to where it was written that the patriarch should do so?

Ọmọ if you truly want to learn humble yourself and learn, scrutiny regarding marriage started from our father in the faith (Abraham)

So whoever finds fault with it is not one of his children by faith! Galatians 3:29

If the tradition did not originate from Adam and Eve, tell me who the tradition originated from. At least, there is no where God Commanded such in the Bible.

God commanded it in the Bible book of Deuteronomy 7:3~
"You must not form any marriage alliances with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons"

How else do you want it to be written that God raised OBJECTION against some forms of union in marriage?

It originated from His friend Abraham {James 2:23} when he made his slave to swear that the man must make sure that Isaac never marry a woman among the Canaanites! Genesis 24:1-4

If you're waiting for where God said it word for word then you're not ready to learn because there's nothing to learn when something has been written plainly all you need is just to read but we learn when knowledgeable people substantiate matters!

Romans 12:17
Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.

It is not everything you want the Bible or God to say word for word, sometimes you have to use wisdom.

What is wisdom?

Wisdom is the correct application of knowledge you acquired.

The knowledge is there but the application of wisdom is to be sure the marriage is HONESTLY DONE in sight of all, devoid of any form of cheating or having a child outside marriage without the consent of the would be husband or would be wife in question.

The spirit of argument has possesed your soul.
Are we speaking of God's objection or man's objection to a wedding!?

Have you ever seen where during a wedding the clergy says
"Oh Lord, Do you have any objection to this wedding?"
"Speak or forever keep quiet!"

I don't have time to waste on you

So when the clergy asked those present to tell any reason why the two shouldn't be joined together they were just joking or wanting to know SCRIPTURAL reasons why they must not be married shey?

It's OK my guy i came to correct the impression that scrutiny during weddings was established by God himself so it's SCRIPTURAL.

May you have PEACE! smiley

It is! Because 2 persons are laying claim to each other so a most responsible and respectable witness present at their union has to ensure that there is no controversy or dispute in ensuring that the couple is validly married as witnessed by all who know them.

But a responsible person has to check to make sure that there is no controversy from any reasonable quarters about their joining, for when they are marrying the community and world would be affected.

Of course, both the bride and groom should do due diligence.

The question of the officiating minister is to the congregation:
"Does anyone have a reason for these ones not to be legally joined as husband and wife?"

Then anyone who has a knowledge about either of the couple not obvious to the minister is allowed to speak up: the ceremony is suspended UNTIL the accusation is verified as true or false
