The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, says it is wrong to tag all Nigerians as corrupt in financial or other dealings of human endeavours.

Owasanoye said this on Wednesday in Abuja at the Behaviour Change Conference and Exhibition 2023, with the theme: ‘Anti-Corruption Interventions in Nigeria-A Behavioral Change Perspective of What Needs to Shift.”

The conference was jointly organised by MacArthur Foundation, Akin Fadeyi Foundation, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, alongside other partners.

Owasanoye said, “At one of the recent policy dialogues organised by the ICPC, two very vocal participants boisterously but erroneously maintained that Nigerians who are not corrupt are those who have not had the opportunity to abuse or collude in the abuse of public office, authority or position.

“This erroneous belief by relatively few people that all Nigerians are corrupt can be considered in the light of the traditional anti-corruption interventions in Nigeria and the recent efforts towards expanding the focus of anti-corruption interventions to include the behavioural change approach.

Why Nigerians are lonely at the bottom

“From my experience in leading the anti-corruption fight at the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption and the ICPC, I can tell you categorically that not all Nigerians are corrupt.”

He further noted that some of the heads of government organisation fell prey to corruption blackmail from their subordinates, because they did not read and understand some of the rules, thus getting misled by the same people who would now send anonymous petitions against them.

Meanwhile, the lead organiser of the event and the founder of the Akin Fadeyi Foundation, Mr Akin Fadeyi, said, “This event was not just to showcase our work, it was strategic to reevaluating our scorecards and redesign more robust templates aimed at scaling up our milestones in measurable impactful proportions.”

On his part, the Country Director, MacArthur Foundation, Dr Kole Shettima, wondered when Nigerian politicians would be self-reformed to work for national interest, rather than their personal interests that harm national interests.

Also, Miss Lilian Ekeanyanwu who represented the Country Director, UNODC, Mr Oliver Stolpe, said, “The fight against corruption is not complete without addressing issues of transparency, integrity, and accountability. At the core of these values is behavioural change or the attitudes of citizens and their government. As we already know, combatting and preventing corruption requires a holistic framework and multi-sectoral approach.”

lagdmark:
leaders matters for the growth of a country.
The effects of Leaders also appear to affect Policies
The results suggest that individual leaders can
Play crucial role in shaping the growth and imagine of a country.
The reason why Nigerians are seen as corrupt people, a Nigerian president has forgery cases
Bullion van looting cases, Drug...... Multiple corrupt cases against him, and the Federal courts in Nigeria set him free of all charges.
How will foreign investors deal with an average Nigeria citizens

So apt .

Oga no sugarcoat anything... Nigerians are corrupt if those at the helm of affairs of the country is corrupt then Nigerians are corrupt from all levels.

When the government is corrupt it means the citizens are corrupt just like the postulation, they haven't been in a position to show their corrupt tendencies.

Only the corrupt and unpatriotic among us believe that everyone is corrupt like them. They were raised to be unpatriotic and corrupt and they grew up to hold strongly to it as a dysfunctional psychological consolation to justify their crimes perhaps until they land in jail and run into Nigerians who are not corrupt.

That Nigeria has stood till date and will continue to remain one blessed nation is because of the incorruptible patriotic ones among us. They are our heroes and heroines who daily go to bed and wake up to give their best and reject bribes and corruption in their tasks. Some of these heroes and heroines remained patriotic and incorruptible till death and any time we sing the National Anthem, we honor them and every time we are patriotic and incorruptible, we honour the sacrifices made by our heroes and heroines.

Reject any job that will force you to embrace corruption as a way of life or job description. If you don't, you will regret your life because nothing that you acquire with proceeds of such jobs will last. You will lose all ni las las!

When they serve you that horrible rhetoric of " this is Nigeria ", just flee! Anyone who says that to you is saying it to induce you to embrace corruption and if you are so naive and ignorant to fall for it, I guarantee you that when you enter trouble, that your corrupt adviser will abandon you to your bad luck. He won't even visit you in jail!

I remember the first day a vendor offered to bribe me to approve his proposal ,I was so shocked at his audacity and why on earth he needs to bribe me when in actual fact, we are the ones who need his supplies so badly we can't proceed without his supplies.
I learnt a very valuable lesson that day, when you are desperate and corrupt, people will know that you're desperate and corrupt so you're actually going to sell yourself short. Check my signature for free stuffs!

If 99.9% are corrupt, what difference can the rest make. Why not call all of us to repentance maybe the Lord God Almighty may forgive and help us.
