Updates on the Al-Aqsa Flood operation presented in this episode of Samri Channel.
Starting with the US Department of Defense, the Pentagon, which announced that the US warship USS Thomas Hudner in the Red Sea shot down a drone launched from the territory of Yemen. A US Army spokesman said: “We are aware of the incident involving the destroyer USS Thomas Hudner, in which the ship successfully defended itself against a drone while sailing through the Red Sea.” Two American officials told Reuters that the American warship shot down a drone in the Red Sea that was launched from Yemen, in what appears to be only the second time that the United States has dropped projectiles near its warships since the outbreak of the Israeli war on Gaza. The Pentagon spokesman and the two American officials did not disclose whether the drone was armed or how close it came to the ship before it was shot down. Last October 19, a Pentagon spokesman said that the crew of the destroyer USS Carney operating in the northern Red Sea shot down 3 land-attack cruise missiles and drones launched by the Houthis from Yemen.

Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper said on Thursday that Israeli red lines caused a delay in the detainee exchange deal with Hamas. She added that Israel set these red lines after Hamas withdrew from an agreement that required it to release 80 Israeli detainees and reduce the number to only 50. She pointed out that Israel insists on releasing only Palestinian women and not children. The newspaper reported that Hamas refuses to release elderly Israeli detainees after Israel opposed the release of elderly Palestinian men. The American newspaper The Washington Post had quoted a senior Israeli official as saying that Israel and Hamas were on the verge of a deal to exchange detained women and children and announce a 5-day truce to achieve it.

The Israeli official, who requested to remain anonymous, told the Washington Post, “The general framework of the deal is understood,” indicating that the deal may be announced within days if the final details are agreed upon. Israel seeks to release all 100 women and children detained by Hamas, but the first group of those to be released will be smaller.

Hamas has indicated its willingness to release 70 Israeli women and children in exchange for the release of a number of Palestinian women and young men, the number of which is still unknown. But according to an Arab official who spoke to the Washington Post, the number of them in Israeli prisons is no less than 120 people. The senior Israeli official said that the detainee exchange deal will be accompanied by a truce that may last 5 days, to allow the safe exit of the Israeli hostages. It would also allow more international aid to enter Gaza to alleviate the humanitarian crisis.

The official indicated that Israel wants to guarantee the release of its citizens whose identities have been identified, in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners, and that the process of verifying identities represents one of the details that officials continue to discuss. Israel is conducting negotiations with Hamas indirectly, through Qatar, where some Hamas political leaders reside.

Last Thursday, the Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, met with CIA Director William Burns and the head of Israeli intelligence, Mossad, David Barnea, to discuss the framework of the deal, which is now apparently in its final stage. The Washington Post indicates that the Mossad was working closely with Qatar and the CIA to formulate the deal. Israeli officials expressed their appreciation for Qatar's mediation, but they also want it to influence Hamas to release the hostages, and not just mediation. They also pointed out that Egypt played a useful role in organizing negotiations with Hamas.
