Good morning NLers smiley cool

I believe this is my first thread this year (2023 must not pass thread creation by grin)

I watched these movies and always wanted to open individual threads to discuss them but here we are. Individual posts would have to do. (Half bread is better than none)

Would like to read other views on the movies. Just quote the movie you want to talk about smiley

Forgotten Love:

I love love that movie though it wasn't clear how the daughter suddenly had the epiphany that the protagonist was her father. I love the protagonist; he gave me an older Outlander's Jamie Fraser vibes. I wished there was a back story how he married his wife given she did not love him & eventually ran away with their daughter to her ex. His relationship with his daughter was pure bliss. His passion to his job & commitment to actually helping the poor was commendable. I also admire his self-discipline when the Miller offered herself to him, he wanted to be sure what he felt for her. He was a very good lover too & understood what she was saying when she said ‘she was not his woman’. And the fact he was the miller's lover & was still humble enough to do his job? Perfect! (Reminds me of Julio in The Gran Hotel). I don’t believe women should chase men however I admit that the Miller chasing the Doc was well executed. I also love the Miller’s personality; sweet & fiesty and absolute belief in her man. When she stole the surgical instruments because he said he could attempt a procedure, that was classic.

I love the daughter's drive to turn her circumstances around despite her misfortune. And I think she would make a fine Doctor. Interestingly, she had better chemistry with her friend than his wife. I was initially rooting for them but on second thoughts, I wonder if he can support and accommodate her dreams. Or maybe he likes the comfortable (his wife) for marriage and leaves the passion & fire for affairs undecided The Count chasing the girl ; don’t know, seemed like a pet project to me. Maybe my bias is playing out here. I still enjoyed some of their scenes especially when he found her at where she was staying before. I also liked when his father FINALLY stood up to his mother. Maybe he had a love interest (guessing from the letters he dug out from the drawer) and familial duty made him marry that bitter woman; had to stand up that his son mustn’t go through same.

The protagonist’s co-worker? A classic example of people who want to put a cap on your growth. At the end, he was fine asserting he had medical training and might even employ him to work for him however Dr. XYZ (you know his name) must be dead! They are the frenemies spoken about. God pass am.

I felt for the daughter of the Jewish man. While the father seemed more tolerated (maybe because he owned the business?), his daughter seemed shunned by almost everyone & the father either didn’t notice or pretended not to.

Things that didn’t work for me:
1. It wasn’t clear how the daughter suddenly became aware that the Doc was her father. She didn’t know his name, his history nor did she seem to remember his face. I believe this is part of the miracles of plot devices
2. The marriage of the tree feller & wife. So dispassionate especially for a country between wars. Such event usually trigger people to live life to the fullest; no one knows when death would come.
3. The movie should have given us a background of the Doctor & his wife. Why did that marriage happen?

Once upon a crime:

Lovely twist to the Cinderella & Little Red Riding Hood (LRRH) stories. Trust Asians to build a ‘strong’ female character who is still feminine. LRRH has magic sha; nobody can tell me otherwise. Her ability to jump from 0 to 1,000 in the name of deduction is epic. But I loved it sha. I loved her banter with the old witch; her constant polite interruptions at the Palace & reconnecting the Prince with his maid. I don’t understand that Prince sha; he moved towards Cinderella during the dance like it was intentional and chased her after. If he just wanted a dance to get his father off his back, then that part wasn’t well interpreted.

Mr. Hans.... dude was psycho. Blackmailing the Prince, cutting beautiful hairs he does not style etc. He was bound to meet his Waterloo sooner or later.

Then Cinderella herself.... How did LRRH figure she was lying about the shoes? While saying she wouldn’t pick raspberries for Margot if she took her shoes make sense, I doubt Cinderella would have a choice if her aunt commanded her to do so?

I am happy the Prince got his love back as per confirmed lover girl.

I wonder how the King felt realising that his Crown Prince was blackmailed by a mere hairdresser because he threw the King's crown away. May we realise our importance & potential o.

Fair Play:

Hmmmmmmm, I would have preferred if the movie gave us a solution to the problem (which is common in the corporate world) than giving us a movie that ended with the usual ‘men are scum’.

Someone said she knew he was a psycho when he mistakenly sucked blood while giving her oral & he didn’t freak out. That part was absolutely not necessary. They could have shown us their ‘great love’ without the nasty detail which would turn people off. But again, what is Hollywood without a bit of nastiness? grin

As usual, there was a lot of ‘men don’t want their women to grow or be above them’ yada yada. If this is what they wanted to portray, then the execution was confusing.

1. Luke was his babe’s ‘boss/senior colleague’ that’s why he wanted her promoted so they can declare their relationship without the hassle of power imbalance.

2. Luke was rumoured to be ‘earmarked’ for the promotion because he was next in line. He and everyone believed he was getting the promotion till his babe went for a midnight meeting with the boss and was offered the promotion instead. I honestly don’t know who would be happy in such a situation; everyone I know in such situation eventually left the company. The babe was NEVER a contender for the position; she was just given on a platter of night meeting.

3. Luke didn’t process his feelings properly. According to the lingo of today, two truths can co-exist:
a. He is happy that his babe was promoted
b. He beefs the employee who took ‘his’ position and the management who gave it out.

He was in denial of B till it consumed him.

4. Only Luke understood work/life balance. The babe didn’t; her colleagues didn’t neither did the overall boss. Luke was said to be an enemy of progress because he told her not to pick the midnight calls or hang out always with the male colleagues. I honestly don’t know who would happily tolerate a spouse who works morning till night and still get random midnight calls.

5. I wonder what the babe was trying to prove following the men to the strip club, getting drunk with them and talking dirty. She could decline & maintain her lady dignity. But what is lady dignity to Hollywood?

6. I like they tried to show us why the lady got promoted instead of Luke. She was a very good analyst, looked at trends and took calculated risks as opposed to Luke who relied on insider trading & luck. She knew her job very well.

7. Luke going bonkers: trying to sabotage her at work, kneeling to beg the boss and trying to badmouth her choice of clothes, carriage etc. I would have preferred a Luke who was self-aware and moved to another firm instead.

8. I don’t get the rape part. Seems more like lack of accountability to me. At that point, Luke had gone full psycho & I salute her bravery following him to the toliet alone & responding to his advances. That babe is really brave. If I were in her shoes, I wouldn’t stay alone with him 100m apart. I love my life & sanity.

9. The end. Why do peeps complain about a behaviour in someone then go ahead to do same thing? Again, the end could be better done without the girl going bonkers. But again, she lied to the boss that Luke was harassing her. I believe the boss knew she was lying but liked her (work) so told her HR would clean it up.

1. I haven't seen any of these movies and your reviews on each movie has me thinking we've got very different tastes in movies.

2. Give me anything with these actors and actresses in it and I am good to go, because their movies never flop;

1. Liam Neeson (Taken)
2. Mel Gibson (Mel needs no intro na)
3. Gerrard Butler (300)
4. Hugh Jackman (Wolverine in Xmen)
5. Sam Worthington (Man on a ledge)
6. The Kendrick Brothers (Courageous)

7. Angela Basset
8. Viola Davies
9. Nse Ikpe Etim.

Let me officially welcome you to the thread smiley

1. Not necessarily cheesy apart from alphabet people agenda, sex crazy movies without a plot, movies to drive ideologies I don't dig (feminism, red pill, senseless love triangles, aiding irresponsibility in men & now women) etc I generally like watching movies.

2. From your list, watched 300 (awesome) and some of Nse's & Mel's movies. Taken & Courageous sounds familiar (maybe there was a buzz around them) but I don't think I have watched them.

Recommend a movie, let's watch and review 👌

You need to watch Courageous, it is a movie right up your ally. Meaning, you will totally love it because of your persona and values on family. The Kendrick Brothers produced War Room but Courageous is even better. War Room didn't impress me as much as Courageous did.

My movie recommendation would be The Glory, a K-drama series with just 3 seasons but well executed. I stumbled on it on YouTube. I've only seen the highlights, but I want more. It is based on a true-life story of high school bullying in Korea.

The actors on my list don't act useless (sex crazed movies) or LGBTQ themed movies, as far as I know, and I hope they never lend their talent to such nonsense and depravity. From your post I am guessing you never watched 50 shades of grey grin. The buzz around it made me watch part three of it, which I understand was reasonably saner than parts one and two.

Thanks, would look for Courageous to watch.

The Glory (also K-drama) I found on Netflix has 16 Episodes. Lead actress is Song Hye-kyo. The synopsis is same.

I kuku watched the part 1 especially as social justice warriors said the female lead was subjugated and she declared the opposite. So I watched it with hubby at home and the last scene where he started whipping her was a serious anticlimax.
