I've always wondered why its easy for the government to demolish structures running into hundreds of millions.

Granted that the builders may have contravened existing laws or even building without necessary vertification, why not stop the building at its infancy?

Why watch someone commit a crime, let him take home his loot, and then go arrest the thief? Why see a robber threaten someone with a knife, watch him stab the person to death, then go and arrest the robber when you could have stopped him when he was still threatening the person.

This isn't me holding forth for the illegal builders, but if the government knew the building wasnt authorized, why let them complete the construction that runs into years, move into the building and after years, you come to demolish?

People will say they were warned. Doesnt matter. If you see a thief entering a bank, do you just warn him or you forcefully stop him?

Let's discuss.

It's for the simple reason that the Nigerian government is a very irresponsible one.

While the builders have no excuse to erect buildings without first obtaining building approvals, the government agencies could as well have been more proactive to prevent or stop the buildings at an early stage; and certainly before it occasions the loss and lamentations.

No building project springs up overnight, they take years to complete and it's well known that the concerned government agencies usually have mobile agents. Even if the buildings were marked and the developer continued, why not demolish it at its infancy?

Same point I was making.
