This topic I’m bringing might affect business owners around this country.
There is this particular customer that came to my shop to purchase certain amount of roofing sheets at June, this year. Then the economy wasn’t as bad as it is right now. Prices of commodities were a little more stable then, than now.
So, this man paid for the items and assured me of returning back to pick up the sheets the following week. Behold, the following week has turned into months.
When he called, I denied that the purchase took place because I had forgotten about the purchase, until he sent me a pic of the receipt(invoice) showing the goods he bought, the price and my signature, also showing “(paid) & not yet supplied”.
I told him he promised to come the following week to carry the goods, but he was giving me excuses as why he didn’t come.
I told him these excuses were irrelevant, because I have limited store space, and I needed to sale and restock asap. and during this period what he bought has inflated about 50-60%. I also told him there’s no way he’ll be getting the goods at the prices stipulated at the invoice.
Now, he’s threatening to arrest me if I don’t provide what he bought. I’m not scared, I’m only lost here. I don’t even know where I stand now. The loss is much from my side and he’s not even considering.

Dear business owners, have you been in this situation before? And how did you solve it?

He’s not taking refund. It seems he’s aware the prices have inflated

Supply his goods. You got the money and used it in growing your business. Stop being mischevious

Why is he threatening you? You both have to agree and that is it. He might not buy at the current market price but definitely can’t get the goods at the price he paid for. You can only give him a discount.

You have used his money to trade & sold out the goods he purchased. However, he has to pay for “keeping” the goods in your limited space for those number of months. Truth be told, his money you used can be calculated based on current market value but the cost of keeping his goods safe for him can only be decided by you. Only you can decide the amount to charge him for using your space after purchasing those goods.

So he should be reasonable. You both should agree like gentlemen or he can get his money back.

P/S Don’t you take stock in your shop? How wouldn’t you have known he didn’t come to pick up what he paid for? You should have called him all these while to let him know he risks picking it up at a new price when the price goes up. That way, he wouldn’t have had the guts to threaten you.

The only way out is for you to refund him or both of you will go to the police station to settle it.

it very wrong. Don't be intimidated, I don't why someone will paid for goods and he assured you he will come pick it up next week.
Weeks turned to months and perhaps we are taking about roofsheets that requires space not even a laptop the case would have been different.. you renew your store every month and you sell and buy back to make profit. Refund is the best stand or he should add money to what he paid u before and pick up the goods

Growing my business? Don’t say that. Thats the same thing the client said… “I’ve used his money to trade” haha
His money is small to start up a kiosk nowadays talk less of growing a business that has been standing for over 30 years. Anyways we’ll be going to the station tomorrow. Not to claim right, but to understand why he’s either right or wrong.
Let him come and pay my store rent for 6 months

Since October I’ve stopped receiving down payment for goods due to the mad inflation ongoing.
He’s not a gentleman, neither is he reasonable.
Imagine I offered a 50-50 split of the differences and he refused.
I’ve made up my mind. Na police go settle our case

I’ll refund him the differences, but he’ll still have to pay for rent and security dues right?

This is a dicey situation
Let’s look at this the other way round
What if the price of the goods dropped from the old price, would you supply him the goods and still give him the balance with respect to the current reduced rate?
My take is that you tell him to come to the shop both of you should dialogue and come to an agreement that sits well on both parties
Going to the station will incure more expenses and still yet end in a dialogue.

Ok how do you suggest I approach him? Cos he seems impatient and he thinks he’s very violent.
I’m only calm, but very stubborn. That’s why I came here in the first place. To find solution that’ll profit both parties

Tell him to come over to your place of business
I don’t know the nature of the goods he bought from you

Evaluate the quantity of goods the amount he paid six months ago can get him

Do the same evaluation the amount can get him now with the current price if the difference is not much you give him sometimes you get losses in business

But if the diference is much lay it bare to him and ask him how he wants it settled hear from him if he’s not being reasonable then you stand your ground

Ensure you get evidence of all steps you took to broker peace and settlement.

U go Dey house Dey spill rubbish haha. The Mr man called in his elder bro who’s a uniform man to my shop today thinking I’ll fidget at the sight of an officer…
no be thesame people wey dey collect #200 for road?? 😂

He initially wanted to create a scene, but I just calm… the first move was to call civil defense chairman to my shop just to enquire how much we pay monthly for security.

I then told him (the officer) I offered his younger one a mediation to settle the differences, even without mentioning how much I paid monthly to secure his goods. Even job men I paid to move his items from point A to B as I needed more store space. I no even mention rent space

Na then the brother calm down, dey ask for 20-80% split. I might take it, I might still insist on 50-50.

Probably you’ve been dealing with people that fear the sight of humans.
If u see me, I’m not even that macho.
But I no Dey fear ur papa
My machoism is upstairs.
