Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has advised President Bola Tinubu to refrain from presenting himself as the Minister of Petroleum Resources. Falana contended that the President’s assumption of the role of Minister of Petroleum goes against Section 147 of the Constitution. He cautioned Tinubu against emulating former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Muhammadu Buhari in this regard.

Speaking on Thursday in Abuja during the public launch of the book “Dis Life No Balance: An Anthropology of Nigerian Diaspora Voices,” co-authored by Professors Farooq Kperogi and Moses Ochonu, along with Dr. Osmund Agbo, Falana underscored the necessity of this advice due to the President not undergoing National Assembly screening before taking on the role.

Falana argued that Tinubu’s position as Minister of Petroleum Resources complicates the accountability of the NNPC Limited. He referenced a recent caution from former Central Bank governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who highlighted the challenges of holding NNPC Limited accountable under such arrangements.

Highlighting the lack of Senate screening for Tinubu’s nomination, Falana pointed out, “President Bola Tinubu is not the Minister of Petroleum Resources, as his nomination was never sent to the Senate for screening as mandatorily required by Section 147 of the Constitution.”

He advised the President not to assume the role of the Minister of Petroleum Resources, drawing attention to the absence of such screening during President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure and the subsequent lack of investigation into substantial expenditures
