When Will FG Create A Study Abroad Loan Scheme? by mrnwas(m): 2:11pm On Dec 23, 2023
We keep hearing how FG did this and all that, cut down cost of traveling for the Yuletide?

When is federal government establishing a Study abroad loan scheme or program to help Nigerian students migrate abroad, learn relevent skills that'll help build a better Nigeria and return home to put whatever they've learnt into practice?

I mean, China did fund scholars to go learn, encourage them to return to China and funded them to put into practice the relevant skills they learnt from abroad and today, China and Chinese are everywhere.

When will the Nigerian government do something similar?

we already have a scholarship scheme, FG and some states. unfortunately, majority of the students didn't return home. Many of those who returned could not put the skills into practice as there is no enabling environment to use them. Also with the current FX scarcity and loans government can no longer afford it. There is also corruption in the system as the elite and those connected are the ones who got the scholarships . The Chinese and many arab countries who do it, there are state-sponsored institutes that absorb them when they return from scholarships. In Nigeria, people will even abuse you for coming back home.

If you say they should do a loan scheme lets say you got 30m for fees and living expenses, how will you repay back when you come back and get a job of 150k to 500k naira monthly grin

"TETFund Executive Secretary also disclosed that more than 137 students sponsored abroad by the fund have absconded.

Echono said it has become a major crisis when some of the scholars sponsored abroad for higher education have “unpatriotically” refused to return to the country upon completion of their programmes.

Very shameful...
Sometimes I wrap for this country.
What really is the benefit one derives for being a citizen of this country?

No good PR
No financial benefits
No good leader
No good road

In other countries people enjoy monthly stipends if they can't get a job.

In Nigeria, even when you're jobless, no one gives a flying hoot!

Sad

Ednut mentioned PTDF. There is a scholar program at the Nigerian Scholarship Board where students get sponsored to study at selected countries - Russia, Israel etc. After their studies, they return. Some states, especially those in the south south geopolitical region sponsor indigenes to study abroad and they get employed upon their return. The one I knew stopped as the forex issue worsened and changed the policy to only in Nigeria. PTDF, at a point, did the same and recommended only within Africa due to the costs. Also, federal institutions and some state governments (Niger Delta Scholarship Program) rescinded on their part by not paying promptly leaving students to pay their tuition fees and expenses.

Then, we had PRESSID by Jonathan, which was very elite - top graduates from all universities in Nigeria to study at the top 25 universities in the world. Covenant University's graduates dominated the list. There were very few northerners. Buhari came in and scrapped it because it was not "inclusive". Good though as some of the selected PRESSID candidates supported and campaigned for Buhari in 2015.

In summary, Nigerians deserve their leaders!

When will you people show a bit of appreciation to this our struggling country, Nigeria. Is the free education at all levels including tetiary education Nigeria is offering her citizens not worthy of appreciation? Some of your so called first world countries including US and UK(except Scotland) don`t offer her citizen such.

As regards your question, considering the financial state of our nation, i see sponsoring a nigerian citizen to study abroad as a luxury that Nigeria cannot afford. Many citizen that got educated free of charge in Nigeria are even absconding from the country in the name of looking for greener pastures elsewhere. Is it not foolish to assume that any sponsored student will return home to practice any skill acquired abroad?

If you have the intension of studying abroad either hustle your finances in Nigeria to do so or secure a scholarship from your intended destination country.

I just saw the comment by @OkanlawonB!
Thing is, you're not even bright enough to read properly before commenting. But i am a good guy, let me school you for a while brother!

I asked about Study abroad loan schemes. It is very different from Scholarships

Travel abroad loan scheme actually is not bad for the economy. If for anything at all, it helps the government earn since graduates will have to repay whatever the government spent on their education at an interest.

It is true the economy is not good, But an economy that can afford NGN160m to buy a single car for every man in the house of assembly should be able to understand this same amount can school 4 engineering graduates in a very reputable university abroad which that can return and add some 10%!

What really are we saying in this country? The government is currently talking about sharing 25,000 to a few Nigerians When we have more millions of Nigerians that cannot say for sure how their next term fees would be paid?

From your comment @OkanlawonB, i put it to you that you're writing this appreciation request for the government that has served nothing but hurt and hardship because a man from your zone is the one in power and i once again put it to you, that you might actually see the next 8 years without a meaningful thing to benefit from the administration other than a few cigarate money during campaigns!

This is democracy brother, demand for its dividends.

A study abroad loan scheme when truly perfected, served to the deserving ones will make the country an envy cos we already know our people are smart.

Just create the clause and prove it with a boldly visible action and you'll find Nigerians jumping in to take it up, live up to it!

If the Nigerian Government would after receiving the graduates on their return, fund their next endeavor with the needed capital, many of these Nigerians would opt for productive ventures that will create employment, create production and send money back into the revenues of the government in form of taxes.

So when you're considering the Economy is not financially stable, but able to buy 160m vehicles which would depreciate with time, you're actually not saying it right!

Anyone not understanding what a scholarship is like should see some insight on the differences between Nice Scholarship and scholarship foundation
