I'm sure every car owner has experienced it.
Few months ago I decided to try out a new shop that was much closer to my workplace than my regular mechanic. I could easily walk there and pick/drop off. The shop is part of a national chain - Monro Muffler Brake & Service. I have no qualms mentioning their name because even after writing their corporate office with a complaint they didn't bother to even respond. So I've taken my reviews/complaints to several consumer websites and posted for other customers to stay away from those crooks. Me I don't joke with stuff like this. I always make sure to lodge formal complaints especially of eggregious offences.

Anyways long story short. I originally took my car there cos I suspected some problems with the belts, during the course I was told that my rear brakes also needed to be changed. They call me later with the quote, a grand total of $867 just to fix rear brakes (rotor, calipers & pads) and they even had the nerve to tell me I was getting a discount of $194. Meaning the total was $1061. My people, please join me and laugh.

This is not my first car or the first time I've fixed brakes so I knew right off that this was a terrible attempt at ripping off who they thought was a clueless customer - they thought very wrong. Maybe if I were driving an aston martin. I took my car back to my regular mechanic and he fixed it for a total of $280. Yes just $280 compared to $1061. If you live in the US, please do not take your car to any Monro outlets. They never replied my complaint which tells me its probably a culture of scamming people at that company. I thoroughly HATE merchants who try to rip innocent people off.

I remember getting ripped off at a dealer in Ebonyi, nice setup that looks more like a honda place type of thing and they just did servicing and washing of cars in addition to selling new cars. Anyway, i took my 2003 EOD there to rotate my tires and wash my engine and discovered my brakes were almost out. They said they could put in the original honda brakes for 10k I hesitated but because I had a journey to make i told them to go ahead. They did. Then about 6weeks later I started hearing a grinding noise from my brakes. I then went to my regular mechanic in Enugu and alas! the so called original honda brake was the rubbish "Autoboss" brand sold for 1k.

Since then I never go to all these dealer that take your care into their garage to work on it in the name of being tech, I just scan the car with an OBD device and where necessary guide my mechanic on what to do. I've even done a few repairs myself cool

This is done by every mechanic worth the title of MECHANIC.
You: I have a list of problems, can you fix it
Mechanic: Easy, Na Japan I dey do since 1978, I don work for shagari car and even Fashola Jeep, your own na small thing
You: Okay how much will it cost in all
Mechanic: You money go be N35,000 my labor na N3,000 shocked shocked shocked (You tell yourself you are getting a bargain right - WRONG)

2 weeks later
You: how far have you finished
Mechanic: Oga e dey like say your foma mechanic don job you big time, as I dey work for buushin I see say dem weld am so new Bushhin Stabilizer we put there and na N15,000 come see am
You: What! Wetin! What! errrmh! wait let me come over - no do anything yet ooh
Mechanic: Oga see as we loose efritin for ground make you see wetin your foma mechanic do do, as we calculate am d money for tokumbo parts na N130k and the origina Japan Na N240k. I fit help you price am down if you want (imagine dat)

At this point you are faced with forking up N130k because you cannot afford Origina Japan and if you try to bail on the mechanic you have already spent N35k and you will still pay N15k for Stabilizer buuushin as well as workmanship which has increased due to newly discovered faults that will not be fixed anyway (N10k because I like you).
If you are stupid enough to pay N240k, they will keep your car for at least 1 month and fix back all the faulty parts, wash your car (fuel on reserve) and deliver to you and still try to ask for N15k additional expenses for using their money to buy parts for you grin grin grin

Nigerian mechanics or technicians are even worse. If they perceive that you are a learner or new to a particular brand of car in use,you cannot escape being cheated.most of them are even theives .why? There is a particular metal(they call it buscuit) in the exhaust, responsible for a peculiar sound of the engine of each brand and also responsible for reduction of fuel consumption, one you leave your car with them ,some of them will remove the metal without your knowledge and pack the exhaust pot with wires.they sell the metal at high price,it seems the metal is used for making improvise explosive.they always have ready buyers

Has anyone tried okene mechanics? Those guys are rogues.
It happened that my top gasket burnt at okene. I had to stop by and get it fixed. So, i met this mechanic.
The foolish guy told me top gasket is 20k and his workmanship is 10k because he would have to loose the whole engine. I was like.....what? Do i look like a mugu?
After so much haggling, shakara and threat, we settled at 7k for all.
If not for the fact that i let him realized i'm a street boy, the Arrow would have used my head and still collect change.

One vulcanizer once made quick 15k from me on alloy rim procurement. Somebody that got to where he claimed he bought the set for me got a price 15k lower than what the vulcanizer collected from me for the wheel the previous day.

The experience with mechanic is countless.

I have this Mexican Mechanic who is ripping me off, but pretty much i will not be greedy because sometimes he is pretty nice in pricing me. But he ate the bad apple recently. I just my Red 07 toyota camry backdoor dashed. He is charging me $800 to fix it if i buy the door, or $1250 if he fixes the door. I am not happy about it, and i don't want to take it somewhere else. I paid $633.25 plus tax for the door, and now he will be fixing it for $800. I bought the door because i realized he is being lazy to work on that door, that's why he is so encouraging me so hard to buy the door. But overall he is a great friend, and mechanic! Credit to him! I ship cars, phones, laptops to Nigeria....hit me up. This is not a paid commercial NL!

Sorry I can't really contribute to this thread.
Reason:- my bmw 325i only goes to the mechanic when I need to service it. That is just changing oil every 3months. And I buy the oil my self. 2 gallons of mobil 1 oil @ 9k each. And I also buy the oil filter too. So its only workmanship. The car no de spoil. No issues. If I need to ever buy a part I will order it online. That way you're sure its genuine and even cheaper sef.

To every mechanic - your last mechanic did a terrible job and he's gonna assure you of a 'job well done'.

"Do not take your car there next time around o" he seems to be saying, "just come to me" he says but doesn't open his mouth to say so. #DeMarketing

My Electrician took my Mercedes Benz C-Class for repairs when one crazy driver rammed into the rear condemning it totally. When I took it to the mechanic, he told me that the back arms need to be changed that the cost is N45K, something told me not to believe this guy. I called my contact in the Mechanic Village which told me the cost is N28K, I eventually took it to another Mechanic who told me the cost is N13K, I ended up buying it for N14.5K because my model has a sensor. when you do the math, you'll see that I saved N30.5K just by haggling.

Lesson, try to know the cost of the spare parts of your vehicle, also know how your vehicle functions, so that you won't be told what is not by anybody.

You won't blame them, they are simple a reflection of a corrupt society. they are not the only one that cheats. What will you say about contractors that inflates and make use of fake and substandard products to execute projects? They are no better than the mechanics.

Dead right. I have changed more than 5 mechanics in the last 3 years, due to this ripping off thing, but it has always been from frying pan to fire, despite the initial assurance and nice words/jobs they start with.

Oga...ti mo ba handle motor yin...eyin gan ma gba....i no no sey na kill him wan kill ma moto.

Mio o kin charge customer......see something as if na charity him dey run.

Run for mechanics who have too many cars in their custody, try as much as possible to know your car, for example you have a flat battery, you just rush to a guy by the road...guy i wan rent bat3, ok, he brings the battery and your car just clicks and does not start(his bat3 is also low)at this point he wants to start touching your ECU(i wan slap the guy with the back of my hand) the guy get the point(instantly i entered the market and bought me a new battery.

Lesson-know your car well
look for signs that may be indicative of a fault
remember they are not educated, they cant read jack
buy your parts, pay them for labour
Never leave your car overnight, except its a major work on the car.

Saw this thread yesterday and i had to wait because my story wasnt ready. I have a client who is owning me, yèsterday she called to come get money somewhere in Gwagwalada. I was surprised she didnt come to the meeting point with her car. Upon asking, she told the car couldnt start. She had already called two mechanics and rewire but no success. I asked her to take of to check the car with my scanner. When we got to her house, the brother had called in another mechanic. I watched him and he said key is bad and needs to be reprogrammed. I told him no, you have to be sure. He sent the VIN to his friend who called and told him to check the fuel pump just as we suspected. He brought down the tank and pump and informed my client friend that the pump is 65k! When i quizzed him, he said it is a new car and the parts are expensive. The car is 2008 Rav4. I remembered i have a mechanic friend in Lagos. I called him and he told me 15k. When this guy saw we were not ready to continue with him, he said we should pay him for the one he did. He said his say was 25k. I almost fought. 25k to bring out fuel pump! His explanation was that he will pay 15k to the guy that checked online for him about the car. This morning i went to Apo to buy pump and i bought the genuine one for 13k. I even taught the guy how to check original part online and he was so happy.
