Where did Okocha get the name Jay-Jay?
Was he really "named twice" by his parent because he's so good like the English commentator said?

The fact is, Okocha's real name is Augustine Azuka Okocha, and not Jay Jay. He was neither given the name Jay Jay from birth, nor was it his nickname. The name Jay Jay actually belonged to his elder brother, James Okocha.

The real Jay-Jay was actually Okocha's elder brother, James Okocha. Okocha came from a family of footballers; James, Emmanuel and Augustine.

James was the eldest and was so good that friends in the street used to call him Jay (from James). Jay then migrated to Jay-Jay.

Sadly, James Okocha's career didn't see the limelight as he was plagued by numerous injuries. When James Okocha couldn't continue, another of Okocha's brother, Emma Okocha took over and was fortunate enough to make 7 appearances for Nigeria Super Eagles, including being invited to Nigeria's AFCON 1990 squad. Emma participated and even scored Nigeria's consolation goal in the AFCON opening game vs Algeria.

However, everytime Emma Okocha played, people always called him, "Emma the brother of Jay-Jay".

As Austin Okocha grew up, he began his career from the street, and then to Enugu Rangers before moving to Europe. Just like it happened to Emma, people would usually describe him as Austin, the brother of Jay-Jay. This is because their eldest brother Jay-Jay was just too popular.

Austine Okocha became the luckiest of the 3 brothers and found his way to Europe, he decided to adopt the name of his elder brother Jay-Jay to honour his brothers legacy and keep the name popular beyond the streets.

Today, the name Jay-Jay is in everyone's memory. And although so many do not know, the real Jay-Jay isn't the football magician...©PBP wrote it
