The Governor of Imo state. Rochas Okorocha on the 1st of November 2011 announced the commencement of payment of monthly salary to all primary and secondary school students in the state the salary according to him is for their upkeep. The primary school pupil will receive 100naira, while their secondary school counterpart will receive 120naira. Primary school monitors will receive 120naira while secondary school prefects will receive 150naira by virtue of their position. I don't know whether to laugh or applaud this move,what can they possibly do with this pls fellow nairalanders express your views. Please Seun can you put this on frontpage for a wider access

Men! As funny and small as it is, its a very wonderful move by d governor. It shows a man dat has d welfare of his people at heart.

though d money is small, i tink its really a motivatin nd challenging step to other governors, atleast dis is d first time citizens ar being paid in Nigeria, thumbs up Rochas.

It's a simple reinforcer. The amount of the money is not the focus, it's the earning of the money that counts. It's a simple psychology behavioral modification process to reinforce children to stay in school.

It's like elementary school teachers distributing gummy bear candy to the best behaved kids in the class room. It's not much, but it makes you feel like you've done something to earn something.

Parents will be like "So did you earn money this month?". A simple "No" or "Yes" will determine the child's effort at school on that certain month. It becomes a conditioned response.

This will work better if Rochas only awards the outstanding students. But of course, one will have to define "outstanding" before the process begins.

The issue is really dicey but I know it surely has its advantage & disadvantage but what I can't still figure out is which of them outweigh the order especially if you want to look at the economic situation of the country. I think the money should have been increase considering the fact that its going to be monthly.

This man shld be applauded. The 120 you see as nothing means a lot to public school students, you need to come down to their level to be able to understand the usefulness of a little. They could buy books and pencils it will even encourage saving.

it's really encouraging and motivating. This can leads to giving salary to anybody above age of 18+. If Rochas mean this things, Definately he become a president he will do more than this, It really encourage educatinon. Some might think, it is token amount of money buh bringing it to primary school level, it worth more than saving

To me this is not a bad move,but its applied the wrong way.
1.Pupils should be sponsored and not paid.the monthly 'benefits'can be converted to setup world class research institutes to handle various medical and engineering progs,but aimed at "catching them young".I won't be surprised if at pry and second.school pupils who can develop alternative fuel energy could emerge.if rochas cab sponsor highly resourceful and intelligent "whizkids"hmmmmm the entire south east will go into competition and produce great human and material resources that make Nigeria proud, or BIAFRAN REPUBLIC a country of intellects. don't say I said so.
