Good day Nairalanders,

I am a philosophy graduate. I finished my service last year in March, and since then, I have been struggling to find a job. From that March, I have been doing whatever work I could find to survive. Around November, I secured a security job at a company, working 24-hour shifts with a day off in between. The pay is only #40,000, and the job is taking a toll on my health and mental well-being, but I'm reluctant to quit as I don't want to be unemployed.

In December, I learned about some vacancies in the company. I spoke to a senior staff member, who promised to help me get my CV to HR for an interview. Unfortunately, in early January, I didn't receive any response. I spoke to the staff member again, and he informed me that the available vacancy is for a storekeeper, requiring experience. He suggested that I modify my CV, adding faux job experiences and applying online to learn about storekeeping responsibilities. He assured me of an interview on Tuesday.

The dilemma is not just about adding false experiences, but I fear that if I secure an interview, I might struggle to maintain the deception. Moreover, if they're seeking an experienced storekeeper, the lack of training might overwhelm me, leading to job dissatisfaction. I don't know how to convey this to the staff member without jeopardizing my chances. I have only today to decide.

Please, advise me on what to do. I want to be honest but also don't want to appear unserious about the job opportunity.

Thank you.

Be honest

If you don't get the job
A better one will come

Whatever you get with lies has been proven to never last and in the process, you'd lose the better job meant for you

No gree for the devil

I understand that you're facing a challenging situation. It's crucial to consider the potential consequences of providing false information on your CV. While it may seem like a quick solution, it could lead to complications in the long run.

Instead of adding false experiences, consider taking a different approach:

Honesty is the Best Policy: Express your gratitude for the opportunity and be honest about your background. Acknowledge that while you may not have direct experience as a storekeeper, you are eager to learn and believe in your ability to adapt quickly.

Highlight Transferable Skills: Emphasize the skills and qualities you gained from your philosophy degree, your security job, and any other work you've done. Showcase your adaptability, attention to detail, and ability to handle responsibility.

Express Enthusiasm for Learning: Communicate your eagerness to acquire new skills and your commitment to professional development. Mention any steps you've taken to familiarize yourself with storekeeping responsibilities since learning about the opportunity.

Request Guidance: Seek advice from the senior staff member on how you can enhance your chances for the storekeeper position. This shows initiative and a genuine interest in the role.

Remember, honesty and a proactive attitude can leave a positive impression. It's essential to be true to yourself and your values. If the company values integrity, it's likely they would prefer a candidate who is upfront about their background.

Ultimately, your well-being and job satisfaction matter, so consider the long-term implications of any decision. If the company values your honesty and willingness to learn, it could open doors for future opportunities.
