LIFE AFTER SCHOOL

It is interesting to note that a good number of Nigerian youths are eager to get into tertiary institutions - either by hook or crook. This shows that they now appreciate the importance of education; unlike in the past, but the question begging for answer is "Does this really portend a positive influence for our economy?"

Education they say, is the lifeline of both developed and developing economies. A country like Nigeria whose youth are eager to gain University education by all means possible ought to be experiencing a surge of innovations but the reverse is the case. This is so because the average Nigerian youth lacks the required information about how to succeed in life, after school.

This problem is even being fuelled by the Nigerian educational system which is designed to prepare students for tailor-made "white-collar" jobs, the situation which has resulted in Nigerian tertiary institutions producing so many Medical Doctors, Engineers, Computer Scientists and the likes without the Country witnessing any serious creativity on their part; Nigerian youths are not trained to create wealth but to acquire wealth.

A fact Nigerian youths need to appreciate is that: regardless of the Nigerian educational system and their background, they stand the chance of setting-up and running firms that would benefit even, the whole Nation; that is the power of innovation.

Most graduates after NYSC scout the town in search of ready-made jobs - for a start, this is not bad; in order to acquire experience - but it becomes a sin if such youths have no vision of being their own bosses. Nigeria indeed would be better if each Nigerian has an establishment of his own.

Most Nigerian graduates and undergraduates alike believe they are restricted to work only within the confines of the courses they studied at School. This kills their creative mind.

A wise man once advised me, He said: "Try not to foster your ingenuity, because getting an education would only make you know a little about everything and everything about a particular thing; but your creativity is what will showcase your knowledge". A youth with fore-sight needs to see, eat, read, sit even sleep, with a critical and creative mind. Such is the mindset of an innovator.

Another significant percentage of youths both graduates and undergraduates especially those from humble backgrounds believe that everything depends on God and destiny, without their making any move to pursue success.

I have a friend who doesn't have a mind of his own. He believes that if he is destined by God to become a boss, he will; but if he's not, too bad. He even supports this view with scriptures; He has no vision!  In as much as we have to put God first in all we do, one still need to be diligent and fore-sighted.

An adage has it that: "Heaven helps only those who help themselves". Another says "One's destiny is in ones hands". The first requisite a youth needs to succeed is vision after which prayers and diligence follows.

Apart from all this, I think it would be beneficial to look at the issue this way: When a father creates wealth and leaves it for his children, only the creative ability and prudence of those children would sustain the wealth; otherwise the wealth will be destroyed. So also is the case of the youth's life after school, the nation's wealth will not increase, it will only depreciate or be recycled if all graduates seek after ready-made jobs. More wealth can only be generated if we have more investors than job-seekers and this will make our great Nation even greater.

In summary, I will implore all Nigerian graduates and undergraduates alike to imbibe a wealth-creation vision and pursue it to its logical conclusion. The need to become investors cannot be over-flogged. The journey might be an arduous one, but uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.
