Obasanjo and Yar'Adua! (Two very people centered, two great leaders Nigeria will never have again.

May Goodluck Jonathan never happen to this country again, his cluelessness gave birth to the idiots we have as leaders currently.

Both the present one and his predecessor are cursed!

A state don't crumble at once, it's systematic, all of them encouraged corruption, safe for Yaradua, they crumbled the manufacturing sector, they bankrupt the power sector, encouraged foreign products taste, boosted importation, looked on while their cronies loot the treasury, destroyed the public service... now we have a wicked President and a puppet!

NOpe, and I don't like tinubu either.

All the complaining we are doing now, was done under all those regimes. And even under the army rule.

Even the idea of Japa ,,,.....ut started in the 1980's.

The economic crisis is what happens when oil prices crash. We had it in the 1980's and 1990's and we are here again now, only this time, what's changed is our higher reliance on forex and imports.

The thing is, strong nations make stuff and export stuff. If you are ready to bash Buhari and tinubu, bash them for not bringing in policies that would have improved domestic production, bash them for running several exchange rates for naira...and bash them for subsidising our power sector and petroleum sector which damaged profits and incentivised corruption, stealing and looting.

At the end of the day, the thing is, we are paying the price for not diversifying our economy.

ALl those who praise GEJ and Yaradua...Yaradua had high oil prices of 145 dollars at one point, GEJ Had high oil prices...which they used to hide the cracks. BY the time oil crashed in 2014, april, GEJ was borrowing to pay salaires, by 2015, NOI was prediciting economic hardship whoever won.

THAT does not excuse Bhiari, tinubu or APC. They should have diversified the economy, and removed subsides from power and petrol, so that forex investors would have come in and plumped up the economy. But they did not, they did not improve tax collection rates, so here we are broke. ANd Tinubu has not done things that should begin the hard road of improvement.

See, NIgeria has never had a good economy since independence. What we have had is a weak economy that looks healthy, until the price of what we sell drops, and we lose income and crash. RIght now we have been in a bad period since 2014, because oyel has crashed so low , we can no longer pay for goodies.

All in all, what we have here is the effect of relying on one thing to fund our economy. NO side hustle whatsoever. Here we are.

FUnny thing is that if you read this, and call me a excuser for government....you don't know anything, and you have no understanding of how economics works. The only magic that tinubu, or obi or atiku could have done would have been to totally remove subsides, totally declare war on kidnappers and bandits, and massacre them wherever they are, and eithe increase interest rates, and reallly fight corruption. Nigeria needs only one cure, and that is total freedom from oil, a higher tax to gdp ratio, and total freedom from corruption.

APC, PDP, and LP Have no effing idea.

After more than 50 years of grossmismanagement, Nigeria's economy needs deep structural changes. If the changes being put into place now cann resolve some of the problems, the economy will be better for it in the medium to long term.

I acknowledge that the reforms will, and is causing short term pain. I do not take that lightly.

All the regimes you mentioned above that you thought were good were charades.

Nigeria made so much money in the early 70s from bumper oil prices. Instead of investing in the economy, Nigerian government blew the money. We started living large. That was a huge missed opportunity.

Mr Shagari's government came into power in 1979. That was when we had the first large scale theft running into hundreds of millions of dollars by a single individual- read about Mr Umaru Dikko.

By the time Mr Babangida seized power in 1984 (?), the country had gone from the overflowing coffers of the 1970s to serious economic problems. IMF entered the picture to dictate what we needed to do. Read about Structural Adjustment Program (SAP).

Looking back, Mr Babangida turned out to be one of the better leaders in terms of infrastructure, but there was also big corruption.

We know there was looting during OBJ's era.

One of the worst periods of economic mismanagement in Nigeria 's history could be Mr Jonathan 's era. Nigeria earned the most money from oil in its history during that time, but 3 months to the end of his administration, Mrs Okonjo Iweala announced that the government was broke and they needed to borrow money to pay the salaries of federal civil servants!

Mr Jonathan's era marked one of the most corrupt in the history of Nigeria. The looting was unprecedented. Mrs Deziani alone allegedly made off with billions of dollars. Several others were not far behind.

The only regime to come close to or exceed that level of mass looting is probably Mr Buhari's. By the time he left office, not only had his administration borrowed so much, it had also pledged a big chunk of the country 's future oil earnings to secure loans, a significant amount of which was stolen.

Mr Tinubu could have followed the same path and cycle trodded by his predecessors by borrowing heavily to maintain fuel, currency, and other subsidies,m, and thus keep the population happy. But that would drive the economy into a future inevitable doom because more than 50 years of reckless and profligate spending and borrowing would eventually catch up with the country and everything would collapse, like Lebanon.

Instead of choosing the easy option, he has chosen to get rid of some of the deep-seated economic albatrosses around the country's neck. By sacrificing short term popularity for a greater long term public good, I applaud Mr Tinubu. He means we'll, and I pray his policies work as he expects.

Nigeria of the past 50 years has been like the people living so-called fake life on the island in Lagos. They live above their means and keep the charade of luxury life going through one dodgy dealing or the other. But eventually, reality catches up and it may be too late for them.

It may be necessary for Nigeria to take short term pain now in order to avoid total collapse of the economy in the future.

On this I stand with Mr Tinubu, and I encourage him to continue to listen to critics of his policies, adjust them where necessary, and continue to keep an eye out for the best advisers wherever they may be in the world.

Well, the changes are not really happening much.

Tinubu needs to totally remove subsides on petrol, and subsides on power. He needs to fight corruption, needs to raise interest rates, needs to fight securitry issues, and needs to stop spending too much on government issues.

There is no change now, it is just government as usual

PDP also maintained fuel subsdies, and also made it difficult for the power sector to sustain itself, and did I mention they were as corrupt as APC is. INfact PDP subsidy maintenance is partly why we have issues with debt. Add their failure to save forex....you see the problem.

I don't like APC, and I can write a thesis on how APC Has messed up the economy...but PDP was no better. If they were, we won't have been left exposed when oil prices crashed in April 2014...so much so that we were borrowing to pay for salaries then

The reason why PDP Is bad and APC Is bad is simple. The economy is still not diversifed and is still reliant on oil. And when oil crashes, we have to borrow money. Things were not good under PDP...we just used oil money to cover the cracks.

GEJ is not the architect, he is a 'symptom'

Ultimately, the problem with Nigeria is simple. 80% OF government revenues come from oil. Also we need oil above 130 dollars per barrel before we can earn enough to balance the budget.

APC that you like, they did not diversify earnings, and they are off to a bad start under this new admin. THey also keep GEJ policies like subsides on power and petrol.

ANyway, Nigeria's problem is a lack of a diversifed economy and a economy that exports manufactured goods and servicies. THat is our problem and has been since 1960.

No, NIgeria was not better under PDP. It was just as bad as APC. People were still japaing then, and lots of money was still looted.

It was the oil prices that gave an illusion of things being better...but it was an illusion.

PDP failed because they did not use the bounty to kickstart diversification of the economy. (I blame APC too for the same thing...expecially since the cricumstances meant they had to diversify). THey also kept subsides, which is a big part of the reason why we don't have money to pay for subsides anymore...and why we had zero refineries, and why refining continued to decline under their rule.

Anyway, at least we agree APC Has failed. THey were voted to be different from PDP, and they failed.

Prior to "99" is my concern. The projections then where base on facts and the results were felt.

We saw proactive measures been taking and activated. I recall when the National Assembly will not want Ngozi to come in because she will be paid in hard currency but Obasanjo stood his ground cos he knew what he saw in her and she delivered.

With Obasanjo PDP we are talking of virtually all arms of government.

The concept of Nigeria diversifying predates 1999, has been there since the 1980's when we went through the first oil shock.

If you think we are a strong nation, think again.

BY the way, the tinubu and his buhari are failures because his polices are not linked to diversification. Therefore he has failed

And if that makes you weep, sorry. cheesy

Nigeria's problem is simple. We rely on oil and oil is not enough for all of us.

All the goverments that we have know that, yet have done nothing about it.

Including this current one.

At the end, we musr diversify or we will miss tinubu when he has gone, like we missed the others,, and we will never know why.
