When you see a doctor reading from a medical dictionary book, just know that you are in 50:50 dilemma.

Chief consultants with many decades worth of experience abroad still consult the medical reference books from time to time.

Some will even tell you they need to do so... Or ask their fellow consultants.

Knowledge is not exhaustive.

Errors actually begin when you think you know it all.

This is a tragic case indeed and I commiserate with the family on this heartfelt painful loss.

Before I open up my line of argument while not holding brief for the hospital, I want all of us to recollect that sometime in October 2005, we lost our first lady [on table] from complications of cosmetic surgery in far away Spain.

Also, Our popular actor RMD lost his first wife MEE [on table] from complications of myomectomy surgery in one of the best hospital in Lagos [1996].

Agreed that a vaginal hysteroscopy may not have required a spinal anaesthesia, we leave the team to explain why they chose to administer it.

The plausible explanation from the patchy one sided history given by the dad could be that the daughter suffered a pulmonary embolism which carries a near 100% fatality in our environment.

If the attending team did inform the patient on the procedure, reasons for the procedure, other available options and afterward extracted a signed informed consent for the surgery, they may go scott free if no negligence is established against them.

There are no minor or major surgeries these days as a minor case can quickly go awry.

Like I said earlier, I am equally traumatized reading this story but we can not crucify the medical team yet until after all processes are concluded.

RIP

Even error from reading the procedures. Experience is the best teacher, they say, but reading what you haven't experienced is a dilemma.

Every second I spent reading I was like “ahn ahn WTF”, “ahn ahn WTF”, “ahn ahn WTF”

God abeg.

Any intrusive procedure performed by any medical staff, my answer is always “No”. Up to malaria injection, just give me the damn tablets.

Justice must be served.

Our best doctors don japa and many are still warming up to Japa. The situation is an emergency for the country but our leaders are clueless!

A sad loss.

A female doctor I saw at my NHIS told me there was nothing more she could do for me. I wanted to ask her if I should take agbo. I kept having malaria symptoms a stiff neck, headache and tiredness. Some of them should not practice as doctors.

Back to this. Why did she subject herself to a procedure over this situation. Many ladies experience this and it passes.

Anyway RIP to the dead.

sad

Speaking from experience here: I have done an hysteroscopy before. What do you need anaesthesia for? It is not even up to 10 minutes! Were the doctors drunk? This should be thoroughly investigated! Anaesthesia na play?

God! Who will console these parents? May God console them. This is unprofessional. They made a certain mistake during the process. . I have leaned my lessons too. I also consulted a doctor last year for a minor feeling and told me he would perform a procedure to clear it.

I was curious to know. He said it’s just a minor procedure that won’t last more than 20 mins.

That’s how I left for the reputable hospital without even telling anyone. Thinking I would soon come back home. Got there, took me in the theatre. The next time I saw myself was on the ward bed with pains that I have never seen in my entire life or seen anyone going through it. I callled my family later to come and they were like” ah but you were ok”

In fact I spent 2 weeks in this hospital. Only God saved my life. I never saw it coming. Meanwhile the doc is a family doctor that I trusted so much. He later told me that if he had said it would be painful that I wouldn’t do it.

Doctors should communicate adequately with their patients.

there are trying to steal her kidney, hence the failed operation.

Never trust those hospitals. You will go for small sickness, next thing them will dose you with sleeping gas and after you wake up you will see some small tear in your right side of your stomach undecided

Kidney is about 30milion in market value now!

No be small.

RIP to her

The day I lost my mum, the whole thing be like film for my eyes. The woman that told me to take her to the hospital, I responded let me go and bath first (I was just coming back from farm). While bathing, my elder brother came and took her to the hospital. She even came downstairs by herself unaided, only for me to hear someone crying that mum is death.

My mind was like, this doctor must have given her the wrong injection if not, how on earth? Even my sister who was beside her said it was after the treatment. cry cry cry

Lack of medical history of patients cause some of this kind of death. There are common drugs some patients don't take due to their health history but we don't have them in most hospitals in Nigeria.

I haven't in anyway discounted experience, nor claimed that studying and referencing trump experience...!

I merely corrected your display of ignorance that consulting books while in practice shows lack of capability, especially as highly experienced professionals in all fields still constantly consult books.

Just take simple correction, and refrain from too much shalaye. grin

Wow, that was a close shave. If it was going to be so painful, why didn't the doctor just use an anaesthesia rather than keep quiet about it? I think God just gave you a second opportunity in life, pls use it wisely, some were not so fortunate.

I pray for comfort for her parents and family.

Exactly my thoughts. In any case, she deserved to be taken care of professionally. May her soul rest in peace.
