A Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt has rejected the Nigeria Police's preliminary objection challenging the court's jurisdiction in a fundamental rights suit brought by Edison Ehie, the Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Government House, against the police.

Justice Sika Aprioku ruled that the lack of involvement of the Nigeria Police Force in a case involving the Commissioner of Police does not make the suit incompetent. The court deemed the Police's objection meritless and dismissed it, ordering them to pay N100,000 in costs to Ehie. Additionally, Justice Aprioku granted an injunction requested by Ehie's counsel, Damian Okoro, prohibiting the police from arresting, detaining, harassing, or summoning Ehie over alleged charges related to the explosion at the Rivers State House of Assembly on October 29, 2023.

Celestine Dickson, representing the police, expressed his intention to review the judgment and advise his clients accordingly, stating, "That is the wisdom of the court, and we cannot criticize the wisdom of the court. The outcome of court decisions must bind parties. If you are not satisfied, I think you should study the judgment and take the next step."

Ibioku Mac-Barango, counsel to the Chief of Staff, remarked that the judgment is in line with legal principles.
