The Nigerian National Chess Championship (NCC) is the biggest and most important Chess Event in Nigeria. It is the determinant of the Nigerian National Chess Champions. The championship features two sections.

1. The Elite Invitational Section.

2. The Open Section.

In the Elite Invitational Section, 24 of the best chess players in Nigeria compete for the Nigeria National Chess Champion and Nigerian National Women’s Chess Champion.

This happens after going through a rigorous selection and qualification process at different levels, which includes emerging tops at the Nigerian National Chess Championship Qualifiers Tournament schedule for different parts of the country.

Then, they are entitled to an invitation to compete in this final stage.

The Open Section accommodates players at every category, masters and beginners with a very strong and vibrant Junior Category, which caters for the age groups: Under-10, Under-14 and Under-20, where other National Chess Champions of the different categories emerge.

Hundreds of players and thousands of visitors participates in this annual chess events which runs for eight days. In the last three years, Orchid-Lekki Chess Club (OLCC) hosts the final stage of the championships on behalf of the Nigerian Chess Federation (NCF). The quality and influence of the Nigerian National Chess Championship has improved and grown significantly, leading to faster development of the sport in Nigeria. The championship has unveiled young talents and provided hints on the future possibilities of Chess in Nigeria. The 2023 edition of the Nigerian National Chess Championship held between 2nd – 9th October, 2023.

TIMILEYIN AGORO EMERGES TOP AT THE 2023 NIGERIAN NATIONAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP.

The Under-14 category featured thirty-nine (39) young talented chess players from all around the country. It was a keenly contested battle for the top prizes and for the top spot to be the next crowned Nigerian National Under-14 Chess Champion. Notable among the players are Master Evbuomwan Henry who was favoured to win the tournament being the only FIDE-rated under-14 chess player at the event. Also, the four-member team of Platform School - Adekanye Arif, Amir Obe, Daniel Taiwo and Popoola Taiwo, who just came into the country after representing Nigeria in Kazakhstan, Asia at the FIDE World Schools Team Chess Championship. They won at the Nigerian National School Team Chess Championship. Master AGORO Timileyin played with these top contenders and won. He emerged 1st position with 5 points out of 6. He won and got crowned as the Current Nigerian National Under-14 Chess Champion.
