WHAT IS GLAUCOMA?

Glaucoma is a group of progressive eye diseases that damage the nerve that connects the eye to the brain and helps us see (optic nerve). It is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide

WHAT CAUSES GLAUCOMA?

It is usually a result of high pressures in the eye which in turn damages the optic nerve. However, in SOME PERSONS their eye pressure range may fall within NORMAL but damage continues to occur!

TYPES OF GLAUCOMA

There are 2 main types:
open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma.

Open-angle glaucoma aka “SILENT THIEF OF SIGHT” is the most common and is PAINLESS

Angle-closure glaucoma is less common and can be SUDDEN and PAINFUL

WHAT INCREASES YOUR RISK FOR GLAUCOMA?

The conditions that increase a person’s chances of developing glaucoma are:
- increasing age (from age 40 and above)
- ⁠the presence of glaucoma in a family member,
- ⁠high eye pressure, certain medical conditions (like diabetes)
