MATAN Unveils Automated Food Security Initiative to Tackle Food Insecurity

In a bid to address the pressing issue of food insecurity in Nigeria, the Market Traders Association of Nigeria (MATAN) has launched its highly anticipated Automated Food Security Initiative. The initiative was officially introduced during a ceremony held in Uyo, Akwa – Ibom State, on March 27, 2024.

The Automated Food Security Initiative, abbreviated as AFSI, marks a significant milestone in Nigeria's efforts to combat food insecurity. Developed as a subset of the Integrated Market Traders Revenue Management System, this initiative aims to streamline food distribution, reduce prices, and ensure accessibility to essential commodities across the nation.

Speaking on behalf of Ambassador Olakunle Moses Johnson, the Chairman of the Project National Steering Committee of the IMRMS, Israel Mauyon, National Head of Administration at MATAN, emphasized the importance of the initiative in addressing the prevalent economic hardships and poverty plaguing the country. He highlighted the crucial role of the informal sector, comprising over 80% of Nigeria's population, in supporting governmental efforts towards achieving food security.

Key features of the Automated Food Security Initiative include price control mechanisms, the establishment of strategically located sales points equipped with QR-code enabled e-stickers for transparency, and partnerships with logistic and cargo companies to ensure efficient transportation of goods.

Furthermore, the initiative incorporates incentives such as insurance coverage for losses in food production and distribution, import waivers on essential food items, and collaborations with security agencies to safeguard traders and their businesses.

MATAN invites stakeholders from federal, state, and local governments, as well as private actors in the food industry, to join hands in implementing this groundbreaking initiative aimed at ensuring sustainable food security in Nigeria.

The launch of the Automated Food Security Initiative by MATAN heralds a new era in the fight against food insecurity, underscoring the organization's commitment to improving the livelihoods of Nigerians through innovative solutions.
