Everton Faces Point Deduction For Second Breach Of Premier League Financial Rule by Miyaaaaaaaa: 7:52am On Apr 09
Everton has been hit with a two-point deduction by the Premier League for the second breach of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Everton was found to have exceeded the permissible £105 million loss over three years by an additional £16.6 million, during the 2022-23 period. The penalty has dropped the club one place down to 16th position, making them perilously close to the relegation zone.

Earlier in February, the club had their 10-point deduction for previous breaches reduced to six on appeal. Currently, Everton intends to contest the new decision, as well. Aside from this, a potential deduction related to the interest costs for the new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium is also in suspension.

The independent commission, whilst ruling on the case, justified their decision stating that any PSR violation warrants a minimum of three-point deduction, and an additional two points for a substantial violation exceeding 15.8% of the threshold. However, considering Everton's loss of revenue due to the suspension of a sponsorship deal with USM, previous punishments within the season, and the early admission of guilt, a mitigation of one point was permitted.

This situation adds to the current uncertainties the club faces, such as the approval of American investment fund 777 Partners taking over the majority stakes and the development of a new stadium expected to open in 2024. Everton's club statement showed concerns over the inconsistency in punishments, with four different commissions issuing varied points deductions in the same season.
