NASRE Condemns Abduction Of Channels TV Reporter, Calls For Immediate Release by Newsextra014: 12:58pm On Apr 13
The President of the Nigerian Association of Social and Resourceful Editors (NASRE), Femi Oyewale, has vehemently condemned the recent abduction of Channels Television reporter, Joshua Rogers, in Rivers State.

Gunmen seized Rogers from his residence in Rumuosi, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State, late Thursday night. According to reports, he was accosted by armed assailants upon returning home from covering an event at Ndoni in the Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area, where Governor Siminalayi Fubara inaugurated a Primary Healthcare Centre.

Expressing concern over the incident, Oyewale emphasized that journalists play a crucial role in society and should not be subjected to such heinous acts while carrying out their duties. He called for Rogers' immediate and unconditional release, stressing that journalism is not a crime but a noble profession aimed at informing and educating the public.

The kidnappers have reportedly demanded a ransom of N30 million for Rogers' release, further exacerbating the distress of his family and colleagues. NASRE appeals to the perpetrators to release Rogers unharmed and urges the relevant authorities to intensify efforts to secure his freedom.

Oyewale also added that, “it is very disturbing that journalists and media practitioners have also become easy targets.”

He called upon the Rivers State Government and security agencies to prioritize Rogers' safe return. He urged national, regional, and international media freedom groups, as well as human rights organizations, to join in advocating for the release and safety of Joshua Rogers.

NASRE stands in solidarity with Channels Television and the entire media community during this challenging time, reaffirming its commitment to defending press freedom and the safety of journalists across Nigeria.
