The Senate has said it will meet with the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and other stakeholders over the recent hike in electricity tariff across the country on May 2, Saturday PUNCH has learnt.

The invitation letters were prepared on Monday and would be dispatched to respective stakeholders for a meeting with the Red Chamber next Wednesday after resumption, a top source in the National Assembly disclosed to our correspondent.

Recall that the National Assembly had again postponed the resumption of plenary to April 30, to allow for the full renovation of both main chambers.

The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, recently approved a 300 per cent tariff increment for Band A consumers, allowing power distribution companies to raise electricity prices for city dwellers from N68 to N225 per kilowatt-hour with effect from April 1, 2024.

According to the NERC’s Vice Chairman, Musliu Oseni, Band A customers will begin to pay N225 kilowatt per hour from the current N66.

In response, the Senator, who pleaded anonymity in order not to kick against the standing rules of the Senate, told our correspondent that the meeting with the power stakeholders would likely be held next Wednesday.

“The Senate is looking into the matter. All these issues happened while the Senate was on recess. So, it’s inappropriate to comment without the Senate first discussing it.

“But we would meet with the Minister of Power and other stakeholders on the increase in electricity tariff after the Senate resumes from its recess.

“We need to hear from them. Their invitation letters were worked on and Monday and are currently in the process of being dispatched. We should meet with them next week most likely on Wednesday after we resume on Tuesday.

“Once we get comments from them, then we can know the next line of action to take.” The lawmaker explained.

In the wake of the tariff hike, the Senate through its spokesperson, Yemi Adaramodu, promised not to abandon Nigerians.

Adaramodu maintained that the Senate would not show indifference to any policy that would add to the economic burden of Nigerians.

After the meeting, they would need to set up a committee to look into the issue deeply, at least by Dec this year, they should be able to come up with their findings and solutions.

Is this not like putting the cart before the horse? The hike should have been discussed on the floor of the Senate before it commenced.

These rulers just throw everything at Nigerians because they know we have lost our voice. The protest we used to use to express grievance has been bastardized and it now feels illegal to hold protests. Even when you protest politicians now introduced counter-protests.

In a sane country the govt would be more concerned with lighting up the whole country. Not throwing most part into darkness to give light to a few that would pay more.

Another waste of time. Nothing would come out from this. All Importers have suspend new import due to the unstable exchange rate and uncertainties in the economy. The importation coming to the country now are old cargos. because it takes 2-3 months for larger container ship with goods to arrive not to talk of months it sometimes take to load them.

And the raason why things are still very expensive and the naira is appreciating. It would only get worst for the naira when they all resumes importation.

The end is near.

Don’t be deceived by the happenings in the Middle East.

These are carefully planned and orchestrated events that will lead to the rise of the false messiah

Israel was created in 1948 by the white devils

The Israel of the Bible are scattered all over the world.

This band nonsense does not make sense at all, where in the world is this done. Prioritizing some class of citizens over others, we barely have 4 hours of light daily. We've never had it this bad. If a certain set of people can be provided 20hours of light, it means the rest of us can get lost for all they care..that minister of power needs to resign if he can't get it right
