Professor Aminu Mohammed Dorai, a renowned educationist and adventurer, drove from London to Kano. The elder statesman broke records, having driven around 4,000 kilometers in 24 days in a Peugeot 504, breaking the world record.

Professor Dorayi is a distinguished Abusite (Ahmadu Bello University) and respected Professor of Chemistry. He was also the former president of the ABU Students’ Union Government (SUG) in 1966/1967. Dorayi established the Sharada Industrial Park in Kano. He was also the first person to organize a trade fair in Nigeria. He was known as the “Adventure Chemist” because of his passion for adventure.
While in England, his journey was inspired by several adventure books he read. For example, he read stories about Marcopolos, the Mungo Parks, and these adventure stories fascinated him. So Dorayi set out on a record-breaking journey driving his Peugeot 504, covering around 4,000 kilometers in 24 days.
The elder statesman said, “England is an island. So when you get to Southampton, you have to take a boat, you and your car to Calais in France. I drove through Paris, then Madrid, Gibraltar.
Then, When you arrive in Gibraltar, you reach the Mediterranean Sea, where you can also catch a ferry to Algeria: “From there you are completely on the road, although in the desert there are no roads, but your compass and your map will guide you.” During the trip, the professor further revealed: “I became very passionate about this while studying for my doctorate in the United States.
I bought a Volkswagen for about $600 at the time. I used it to drive through the desert there. He added that he was very adventurous, which is why his autobiography was also titled The Adventurous Chemist.
Dorayi revealed he bought a Peugeot 504 for £1,000 and hit the road straight away. He said: “I have received assistance from the British Automobile Association (AA). They gave me guides, maps and routes.
