He asked for building approval; it was provided. He then made a volte face and accused the poster of being sponsored by some developers.

The next is to accuse some political detractors of trying to rubbish the good work he is doing in trying to sanitize Lagos State.

If you violate the condition(s) of your permit(s), expect to face the consequences. Simple as ABC.

Same people saying No to the clearing and demolition of structures blocking the drainage system (artificial and natural), would be the same people that would laugh at the state when it gets flooded.

I believe this inhumane act by government officials will birth a new set of r*dic*ls/m*fi* that might change the dynamics in the state.

Hopefully the people will dance with APC and welcome them with open arms by the next election...

Good that the Commissioner took his time to explain the illegality of the developers in mende to the twitter activist and that made him to go mute. Even with approvals people still encroach on the space not allocated to them.

I guess it's time for this mentality of house a must to stop in Nigeria.

Personal house is not an asset but liability, the more personal houses you have, the more liability as you are not making money on it while still be paying taxes and be maintaining every year

Don't do all in the name of society conformity and waste your money building your house at the wrong area.

The pending heavy rain in Nigeria which has been raining globally like that, just wondering the kind of damages the houses constructed along the drainage would face.

Tokunbo Wahab is the next governor of Lagos State. If you can't obey the law of the State as an indigene, get ready to be prosecuted. If you are a non indigene, go back to your State, and I am not just talking about South East, even if it's Ondo.

I am a proud indigene of Osun State living in Lagos, and I have never disobeyed the law of the state.

That's just an excuse the honorable commissioner gave to wriggle himself out of the quagmire.

Did he investigate to find out why a house given building approval will be demolished after sixteen years by the same government that gave the approval?

The approval became invalid the moment the permit conditions were violated.

Before you say sane climes, It happens everywhere in the world. The long arm of the law eventually catches up.

I'm not surprised that you didn't see anything bad in what the developer did by encroaching on the drainage line.
You people support everything wrong. The LASG will do everything within the ambit of the state law to protect its citizens. If you're not ready to abide by the state laws, you Nd your ilks are free to relocate to a state where anything goes.

The commissioner is right.

There is no need sensationalising the matter. Even common sense should tell one not to build close to a drainage line much less on it.

The government officials too have to be more proactive. Immediately construction starts, demolition the building and charge the owner and contractor for damages and violation of the law.

Don't wait until the building is completed.

From commissioner's statement, there was a violation of the existing approval. If this was not so, the owner should present the layout and building plans.

2,500 residential units are built in Lagos per month. I don't think government would have the manpower needed to monitor those construction starts. This is according to REDAN - Real estate development association of Nigeria. A house can even be built completely in less than 6 months depending on how deep the pocket of the developer is.

I wasn't making excuses for the developer

I said that the honorable commissioner came up with that excuse just to wriggle himself out of the quagmire. Simple

No difference between you and the critic! Criticizing without critical analysis of the validity or otherwise of your submission.

There’s not much government can do because supervision and monitoring is almost impossible unless you want govt to employ another 30-50k people monitoring property development. However, govt needs to provide mass-education and ensure a transparent and open process.

Well, you do have a point. But still, innovative ways must be made to ensure tracking. Government should look into it.

I don't think employment of such large numbers is needed, though I agree with you on the difficulty of monitoring.

This is where innovations are needed. And yes, mass education and transparency would be vital.

Mass education will help reduce but not eliminate.
In the abroad, even with an highly educated populace, people still break the law and build houses without a valid approval or going a different path from the condition set out in the permit. Someone posted some demolitions in Canada not long ago. Demolition happened after building was already standing and had occupants.

However, the education is still a step in the right direction, even if it reduces demolition by 1/2.

Did they demolist the part encroaching into the drainage channel? No. They demolished everything. Thats a sign of bad faith!

From his explanation, they ought to demolish upto the approved setback and not everything. Its like demolishing 100% when only 10% encroached.

Thats a sign of bad faith.

If indeed thats a drainage route, how come they've not been flooded?

Some of you can’t read and understand. It is not just about an approval but about the validity of the approval. Once you violate the condition upon which an approval was given, it becomes invalid and useless. You can contravene your building approval and still be claiming to have a valid approval. Kudos to the Hon. Commissioner for putting Ilemona in his place.
